DURANGO, Calif. - Led by the red-hot hitting of
Clara Larson and
Kara Jones, Colorado School of Mines took two from Fort Lewis to start RMAC play on Sunday.
The Orediggers (8-6, 2-0 RMAC) compiled 28 hits over the two games as they won 13-2 in six innings to start and 6-1 in the late afternoon. Mines has now won six in a row over FLC (6-10, 0-2 RMAC) dating back to last season.
Larson was absolutely unstoppable, going 7-for-10 with five runs scored and four RBI combined as she was a triple short of the cycle in game two. Jones was nearly perfect as well, going 6-for-7 with three RBI for the twinbill.
GAME 1 - Mines 13, Fort Lewis 2 (6 inn.)
Larson's four-hit game supported a combined effort from
Claire Stringfellow and
Maddie Rogers as Mines scored a season-high 13 runs in the opener.
Larson,
Kylie Redding,
Katie Leiker,
Megan Dickson, and
Pua Fujinaga each drove in two runs each as
Sonoma Toot, Larson, and
Boston Ludlow scored three runs each. Four Orediggers had multi-hit games in Larson (4),
Kara Jones (3), Dickson (2), and Ludlow (2), while Toot drew three walks out of the leadoff spot.
Mines scored early and often as Toot reached to start the game and later scored on a wild pitch before Dickson doubled home Larson to lead 2-0 after a half-inning. In the third, Jones' RBI double brought home Ludlow, and Larson's double to plate Toot sparked a five-run rally in the fourth that included a two-run Fujinaga double.Â
Fort Lewis put two on the board in the fourth to prevent a fifth-inning stoppage, but Mines ended it with another five-run frame in the sixth as Redding's pinch-hit two-run single made it 10-2 before Larson tacked on another single to plate Toot before scoring along with
Brielle Asato on an error to make it 13-2.
Stringfellow (4-3) and Rogers split the game as Stringfellow started and allowed two runs - neither earned - and Rogers allowed only one hit over three innings of relief. FLC started Mandy Lorenson (3-3) departed in the second after being struck by a batted ball, with relievers Kassidy Trumbo (5 ER, 2.1 IP) and Kelly Decker (3 ER, 2.1 IP) combining to finish the game.
GAME 2 - Mines 6, Fort Lewis 1
Hallie Smith tossed a three-hit complete game as the Mines bats continued to produce in the late game's 6-1 victory.
The Orediggers generated 13 hits as
Clara Larson hit her seventh home run of the season as part of a 4-for-5 game. Mines hit five doubles in the contest.
As she did in game one,
Sonoma Toot started the scoring as she turned a lead-off walk into a run on Larson's single, and
Megan Dickson drew a bases-loaded free pass before
Kara Jones singled in Larson to lead 3-0 after one. Dickson and Jones and again combined for a pair of RBI doubles in the third to lead 5-0 before Larson launched her home run in the sixth, a solo shot, to make it 6-0.
Smith (2-2) struck out four and allowed just three hits with the only blemish coming on an unearned run in the sixth as Tristen Gilbert scored on a throwing error. Mines chased FLC started Kendra Keahbone (2-3) in the third after she allowed five earned and walked four, with Kelly Decker finishing the final five innings giving up one run.
