GOLDEN, Colo. – Caleb Thomas and
Colton Wardle both jacked their first home runs of the season Sunday but it was not enough as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team suffered an 11-5 loss to CSU-Pueblo in the series finale at Jim Darden Field.
Wardle finished the day 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Joe Popp also collected two hits and drove in one run. Thomas went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Toby Scoles (0-1) made the start on the bump for Mines but did not factor in the decision as he surrendered five runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Zach Hoffman (1-1) earned the win for CSU-Pueblo behind 7.0 innings of three-hit, shutout relief.
Max Moxley,
Mitch Menard and
Owen Pigati all appeared in relief for Mines.
CSU-Pueblo (10-11, 2-6 RMAC) jumped ahead with two unearned runs in the opening frame. Mines (10-5, 6-2 RMAC) got one back in the second thanks a double from
John Howard and a RBI-single from Popp.
The Orediggers took the lead the very next inning. Thomas and Wardle tied it with back-to-back home runs to start the inning as Mines racked up four runs on four hits to make it 5-3.
One ThunderWolves' run in the fourth and another in the fifth tied the game at five. Then, CSU-Pueblo took complete control with three runs in seventh and a trio in the eighth as Mines' bats went silent.
