DENVER – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped its series finale Sunday as MSU Denver took a 6-5 win at the Regency Athletic Complex in its only win of the weekend.
Trevor Kehe led the Orediggers in hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double.
Joe Popp scored twice and went 2-for-5 on the day with a stolen base.
Walter Pennington continued his slugging ways as he smacked his ninth home run of the year, driving in two and scoring once.
On the mound,
Toby Scoles (0-1) made his fourth start of the year but did not factor in the decision. Scoles tossed 7.0 innings and surrendered four runs on six hits while striking out five.
Nick Gardner,
Sam Slusser,
Matt Martin,
Owen Pigati and Mitch Mendard all appeared in relief for Mines as Slusser (0-2) took the loss. For the Roadrunners, Trent Maloney (1-0) got his first win of the year.
MSU Denver (10-15, 6-6 RMAC) took an early lead with one run in the first inning. However, Mines (16-6, 9-3 RMAC) responded with a three-run second thanks to Pennington's long ball to right field.
The Roadrunners tied the game with two runs in the third as both defenses worked scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth. Two runs for Mines in the sixth came courtesy of a
Derek Daly double and
John Howard single.
MSU Denver pulled back even with single runs in the sixth and eighth. Late miscues for Mines allowed the Roadrunners to come away with a walk-off win as the plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
