Orediggers Fall To Black Hills State

GAME 1 - Black Hills State 7, Mines 2
Early offense by Black Hills State and a solid pitching performance from Melissa Gellermann handed them a 7-2 win over Colorado School of Mines in the morning's game.

Both teams produced nine hits, but it was the Yellow Jackets who made the most of their opportunities as they led 5-0 after two innings and forced Mines to leave nine on base.

A fielding error in the first allowed Kindall Bethke to score for BHSU, and they put up a four-spot in the second as Maddi Fidler led off with a solo home run and another error allowed two runs to score before Maddi London singled in Bethke to make it 5-0. The Yellow Jackets added runs in the fourth and fifth as Brittany Henricksen doubled in Samantha Gill and Bryce Henricksen singled in Katelyn Odle.

Mines tried to chip away at the deficit, getting on the board in the fifth when Sonoma Toot singled and scored on Clara Larson's double, and scoring again in the seventh when Katie Leiker came across on a wild pitch.

Gellermann (3-7) solved Mines for the second time in the series with five strikeouts. Maddie Rogers (3-3) allowed five runs - only one earned - over two innings while Sydney Marchando battled through five solid innings of relief with eight strikeouts.

GAME 2 - Black Hills State 2, Mines 1
Mines came out on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel between Hallie Smith and Alex Wiley as BHSU held on for a 2-1 win.

Smith (6-5) was the hard-luck loser as she struck out five and allowed only two runs on six hits, including retiring 13 in a row at one point. Wiley (2-5) allowed 10 hits but only a single run - Megan Dickson's solo homer in the fourth - as the Orediggers stranded 11 baserunners.

Black Hills State took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third as Maddi Fidler drove in Claire Fergusson in the second and London singled home Bryce Henricksen in the third. Mines cut the deficit in half when Dickson launched her third of the year to lead off the fourth, but left a runner in scoring position in each of the last four innings without converting as Wiley held tough for the win.

Brielle Asato, Dickson, and Dani Valerio each had two-hit games for Mines.
