GOLDEN, Colo. – It was a pitcher's duel Friday afternoon at Jim Darden Field as the No. 14-ranked Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped its series opener to Colorado Christian, 3-2.
Drew Burman (6-2) made the start for Mines and tossed 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts while surrendering just one run by way of a wild pitch. Cougar starter Joey Loranger (4-3) also pitched well with six strikeouts in 8.0 innings on his way to the win. Alex Ginn got the save, his first of the season, while
Sam Slusser (1-3) took the loss.
At the plate,
Mikey Gangwish finished the day 1-for-4 with his 15th home run of the season.
Jace Selsor went 2-for-4 and scored the Orediggers second run.
Derek Daly and
Daniel Ciraula turned in multi-hit performances as well.
Colorado Christian (15-20, 10-15 RMAC) took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame using one hit and a wild pitch to take the lead. Mines (26-9, 19-6 RMAC) responded by holding CCU scoreless for the next five innings.
The Cougars held the Orediggers scoreless over the same five innings. However, Gangwish broke up the shutout and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to right field. Single runs in the eighth and ninth inning put CCU back in the lead, 3-1.
Selsor led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a triple. Daly drove him in with a high chopper past the third baseman. Unfortunately for Mines, Ginn came out of the bullpen for the Cougars and recorded the final three outs to clinch the victory.
