Final 2017-18 Learfield Directors' Cup Standings
GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines has notched its best finish ever in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings, placing sixth in the ranking of athletic department performance in NCAA Division II.
The Orediggers compiled an all-time best 671.25 points to record the second top-10 finish in program history and best since coming in 10th in 2012-13. It also marks the seventh top-20 finish in the past decade for Mines. This year, 268 NCAA Division II members scored points.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's national finish in up to 14 sports in NCAA Division II championships. Cal Baptist, in its final year as a D-II member, won the cup, followed by Grand Valley State, West Texas A&M, Saint Leo, and Florida Southern. The Orediggers were the highest-ranked RMAC finisher with Adams State in 15th, Western State in 23rd, and Colorado Mesa in 25th.
Mines' record-setting finish came thanks to its best spring season ever. The Orediggers scored points in four different spring sports, led by men's track & field's 10th-place NCAA finish to generate 66.75 points. Baseball's first-ever NCAA appearance garnered 50 points while golf scored 37.5 points for their NCAA Regional appearance and women's track & field scored 27 points for a 46th-place national finish. The spring total of 181.25 points added to 329 from the fall and 161 from the winter.
The 2017-18 season also marked the third consecutive year that Mines won the RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup, which uses a similar point system based on conference results.
