CHICO, Calif. - #13 Colorado School of Mines dominated the game, but Chico State's defense was equal to the task as the two teams battled to a scoreless draw on Sunday.
The Orediggers (1-0-1) outshot the Wildcats (0-0-2) by a 23-9 margin (including 14-2 in the second half), but couldn't find the net as Vic Graham made seven saves for Chico State.
Shannon Mooney made three saves on nine shots faced as she and the Mines defense did not concede a goal for the second straight game to open the season.
Mines' best scoring chance came at the very end of regulation as Graham dove to save
Peyton Sanders' last-ditch attempt with nine seconds remaining. The Orediggers had a few good looks in overtime but none better than
Nicole LaTourette's chip over the bar in the second extra period.
NOTABLES
- Sanders and LaTourette led Mines with three shots each, with LaTourette putting three on goal.
Eliot Edwards took three attempts off the bench.
- Chico State led 7-5 on corners.
- The result was Mines' first regular-season double-overtime draw since a 1-1 game with CSU-Pueblo in 2015. Mines and Regis had a lightning-shortened 1-1 draw last year that did not get into overtime.
- Mines had not played a scoreless draw in the regular season since 2015 against MSU Denver.
- For the first time since 2016, Mines had someone other than
Shannon Mooney in goal - albeit for only eight seconds. Mooney took a knock on a play midway through the first half and was required to leave the field following the stoppage; with no other goalkeeper on the travel squad for the weekend, midfielder
Taylor McRae put on the gloves and watched as Chico State sent a corner kick into the side netting. Mooney re-entered and finished the game, and the shutout is technically split between the two.
- It was the first meeting between Mines and Chico State. The Wildcats also played a scoreless draw with RMAC foe Regis on Friday.
- Chico State ran its home unbeaten streak to 16 games (11-0-5). Mines remained unbeaten on the road in nine straight games (7-0-2).
