#5 Mines Downs Fort Lewis, 3-1

GOLDEN, Colo. - #5 Colorado School of Mines ran their RMAC start to 5-0, scoring two unanswered goals to beat Fort Lewis 3-1 at Stermole Stadium.

The Orediggers (8-1-1, 5-0-0 RMAC) thoroughly handled a tough Skyhawks (4-3-0, 3-1-0 RMAC) team that entered unbeaten in conference play, outshooting FLC 31-2 and holding them without a shot for the final 79 minutes of the game.

Peyton Sanders, Nicole LaTourette, and Emily Townsend had the Mines goals as the Orediggers put 12 shots on goal. Sanders got things going early thanks to a spectacular cross from the left sideline by Jennifer Kendall; Sanders took the ball at the top of the box and slid it under a charging goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

Fort Lewis, however, came right back and leveled the game 1-1 as Britney Johnson put in Emma Patron's corner kick at 10:51. As it would turn out, that would be Fort Lewis' second and final shot of the game as the Mines midfield and defense held huge stretches of possession that paid off with two more goals. LaTourette put Mines back ahead in the 35th minute, slashing through the defense to finish with a hard shot to the left side of goal, and Townsend netted her third of the year in the 62nd minute, finishing off a Dominique Rivera free kick that rebounded off the crossbar.

Shannon Mooney had one save to earn her eighth win of the year. FLC starter Britt Blomso left the game with an injury in the 12th minute, and Kaylee Mickens was outstanding with 12 saves in relief to keep the Skyhawks in it.
