SEASIDE, Calif. – Redshirt freshman
Lucas King scored the first goal of his career Friday, and he did it dramatic fashion – knocking home the game-winner with seconds remaining in the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team's double-overtime victory over Cal State Monterey Bay (0-2-0) at Otter Sports Complex.
Joining King on the scoresheet were
Matthew Summerfield and
Julian Kehe. Summerfield scored the equalizer in the 88' of regular time thanks to an assist from Kehe. It marks Summerfield's second goal of the season and Kehe's first assist in 2018.
John Haist led the Orediggers (2-1-0) with four shots, putting three on goal.
Ford Edwards contributed three attempts with two on frame.
As a team, Mines edged the Otters in shots, 17-14 and put 10 on goal compared to CSMB's seven. Oredigger goalkeeper
Drew Johnson had a career night with six saves as he improved to 2-1 in his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On a night filled with drama, the first half proved mundane with no goals and nearly evenly matched statistics across the board. Edwards created an early chance just five minutes in and Haist created another opportunity in the 11th minute, but the Otters stood strong and took a 0-0 scored into halftime.
The second half brought the fireworks as Cal State Monterey Bay touched the scoreboard first with a goal from Luis Lopez in the 52nd minute. Walmer Martinez assisted his teammate to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
With regular time coming to a close, it looked all but over for the Orediggers. However, with 90 seconds remaining Summerfield's header crept over the goal line and brought Mines level thanks to a pass from Kehe.
Overtime was a near carbon copy of regular time as neither team found the net in the first 10 minutes. Mines' flair for the dramatic reappeared in the second portion of extra time as King took a pass from
Connor van Loveren, touched it past a defender at the edge of the 18-yard box and finished far post with just 46 seconds remaining.
