DENVER - #21/23 Colorado School of Mines toughed out a late MSU Denver comeback attempt, holding on for their 14th consecutive win in a 77-71 game on Friday.
The trio of
Mason Baker,
Ben Sonnefeld, and
Ben Clare combined for 55 points, and
Michael Glen had a double-double to lead Mines in a gritty battle against the Roadrunners (7-9, 5-7 RMAC). Baker scored a game-high 21, while Sonnefeld scored 18 and Clare poured in 16.
The Orediggers (15-3, 12-0 RMAC) took a three-game lead in the RMAC standings after UCCS fell to Chadron State on Friday; Regis and UCCS are both 9-3.
Mines took control of the game with a 21-6 stretch in the second half after the Roadrunners took the lead early in the second half. That nine-minute stretch was enough to hold off MSU Denver, who outscored Mines 24-17 in the closing eight minutes to make it a two-possession game at several points late.
Neither team led by more than four in the first half, and MSU Denver came out of the half with more momentum to quickly take the lead on Elijah Straughter's three-point play at the 17:52 mark. That put the home team up 41-39, but Mines answered with a huge 17-5, 5:04 run that included six points from Sonnefeld and five from Baker to blow the game open at 56-46.
Mines' lead eventually grew to 14, 65-51, with 7:19 remaining, but MSUD began to inch back in after Jaryn Taylor hit a three-pointer, and Garrett Carter made all three free throws after being fouled outside the arc. That cut the Oredigger lead to 66-61 before a 6-0 Mines run - capped by a Glen slam - slammed the door by putting the visitors up 11 with 2:20 to go. Carter hit a three-pointer, layup, and another three in the closing minutes, but Baker and
Joe Miks combined for five points at the foul line in the final 31 seconds to ice the game.
