PUEBLO, Colo. - #7 CSU-Pueblo went up early and Colorado School of Mines never caught up as the Thunderwolves won 23-11 in an RMAC dual on Saturday.
Weston Hunt upset #4 Gavin Nye at 285 pounds,
Robert Gambrell earned a technical fall at 174, and
Noah Ottum worked a decision at 149 to provide Mines with its points; CSU-Pueblo won everywhere else, but Mines hung tough with five of CSUP's seven wins coming by a single score.
The Thunderwolves got off to a big start as Josiah Seaton won 12-2 over
Matt Lavengood at 125 thanks to a big third period, and #2 D'Andre Brumfield won 14-3 over
Jake Woods at 133 to lead 8-0.
Lukas Erickson sent his bout with Paul Garcia to sudden victory at 141 but Garcia came away with a 4-2 win before Ottum stopped the bleeding with a 3-2 decision over Oscar Diaz at 149, cutting the deficit to 11-3.
CSU-Pueblo won the next two weights in close battles as Isaiah Diggs used a third-period takedown to top
Skyler Lykins 6-4, and Gavin Melendez won 4-2 over
Keenan Willits on another third-period takedown. Gambrell put five poitns on the board at 174 with a dominating 18-2 tech fall against Aaron Benton, working three consecutive nearfall-four tilts in the second period to halt the bout.
Facing three nationally-ranked individuals at the upper three weights, Mines didn't shy away as
Connor Ventura wrestled #7 Tarrence Williams within a point, 7-6, and
Jake Feldman showed heart in a 3-2 setback to #7 Haszell West. That left the heavyweights, where Hunt scored a takedown in the closing seconds to break a 1-1 tie and beat #4 Gavin Nye, 3-2.
NOTABLES
- Mines had a chance to capture a share of the RMAC title with a win; the Orediggers can still do so with a win in their final dual of the season against Colorado Mesa on Feb. 6, regardless of any other results. Mines has never won the RMAC championship.
- Mines is now 10-3 overall and 5-1 in RMAC duals; CSU-Pueblo improved to the same records.
- Ottum improved to 8-5 in duals and 9-7 overall this season.
- Gambrell extended his record to a team-best 14-2 with his second tech fall of the year. He has a Mines-best 49 dual points.
- Hunt improved to 8-4. It was the second straight dual that a Mines heavyweight beat a ranked opponent as
Brandon Saunders had defeated #12 Courvoisier Morrow of Lindenwood last weekend.
- Both Willits and Hunt were wrestling in their home town of Pueblo.
- CSU-Pueblo was the eighth top-25 team Mines has wrestled this year; the Orediggers are 5-3 in those duals.
