GOLDEN, Colo. - It wasn't always pretty, but Colorado School of Mines found a way to win its ninth in a row with a 93-75 decision over Dixie State on Saturday.
The Orediggers (10-3, 7-0 RMAC) survived foul trouble by a number of key personnel to outscore the Trailblazers (4-7, 2-5 RMAC) 47-33 in the second half to break open a close game. The win put Mines atop the RMAC standings as the conference's lone remaining unbeaten after Colorado Mesa defeated Black Hills State on Saturday.
Mason Baker was the game's leading scorer for a second straight night as he drained a season-high 23 to go with five assists. He was one of six Orediggers scoring in double figures as
Austin Means had 14 to go with 10 rebounds off the bench,
Ben Sonnefeld scored 10, and
Brendan Sullivan,
Michael Glen, and
Ben Clare each had 10.
In a foul-filled game that had 53 total whistles, both teams struggled to keep their rotations intact as Mines had Sonnefeld, Glen, Clare, and Means all in foul trouble for long stretches, and Dixie State having Zach Frampton and Andre Wilson foul out with Quincy Mathews in trouble.
Mines led much of the first half but never by more than two scores as Dixie State shot 65 percent in the period. The game stayed close well into the second half, getting as tight as 60-57 Mines with 13:48 remaining after a Dub Price jumper, but the Orediggers shut the door over the next few minutes with a 13-4 run sparked by Glen's three-pointer and five points in that span by Means. That made it a 73-61 lead for the Orediggers, and DSU went without a field goal over a 4:42 span later in the half to help Mines win by its largest margin of the game at 93-75.
