Higgins' Late Winner Lifts #17 Mines Past Regis

DENVER, Colo. - Emi Higgins' goal with 1:14 remaining in the game broke open an entertaining battle as #17 Colorado School of Mines edged Regis, 1-0.

The Orediggers (14-2-1, 10-1-1 RMAC) secured no worse than the #2 seed for the RMAC Tournament with the win over the third-place Rangers (9-4-2, 6-3-1 RMAC).

The Mines defense was once again outstanding picking up their tenth shutout of the season, holding Regis to 10 shots and four on goal. Mines held an 11-10 shots edge but out-produced the Rangers 11-6 in the second half.

A tentative first half for both teams saw the Orediggers struggle to build positive possession as Regis outshot the visitors 4-0. The Rangers' only dangerous chance came in the 34th minute when Keegan Storlie forced a diving save by Shannon Mooney.

The second half was a complete turnaround for Mines, and in the closing half-hour it felt as though a goal would come. Higgins' breakaway was stoned by Julia Coombs in the 55th minute, and Nicole LaTourette had a close-range effort saved in the 79th minute. Giselle Sawaged came from the back and was inches off the post in the 82nd minute, and Emma Peterson had a similar long-range look moments later, but Mines' breakthrough finally came with less than two minutes to play. Kaylee Kennedy found space up the right side and crossed to the top of the box, where Higgins beat a sliding defender to a far-post finish.

NOTABLES
- Mines played on back-to-back days for the first time since 2014 when they visited St. Edwards and St. Mary's in Texas. The date change was due to the forecast for heavy snow across the Front Range on Sunday.
- Mines actually moved a point clear of UCCS in the RMAC standings, but UCCS has two games in hand as they have three left to play versus the Orediggers' one.
- Higgins' goal was her team-leading eighth of the year. The freshman also scored two on Friday at Black Hills State.
- Kennedy handed out her third assist of the year, tying her with Nicole LaTourette, Jordan Barnhart, and Chaney Brugman for the team lead.
- Mines' 11 shots were a season low. Higgins' three shots led the team.
- Shannon Mooney made four saves, including a couple of excellent stops in the first half, to pick up the shutout. Julia Coombs also had four saves for Regis including several at close range in the second half.
- Mines improved to 18-8-1 all-time against Regis, and are unbeaten in their last seven against the Rangers.
