CHADRON, Neb. - #7 Colorado School of Mines completed its first perfect regular season since 2004, running all over Chadron State in a statement 70-28 win to improve to 11-0.
The Orediggers wrapped up an unshared and undisputed RMAC title with 440 yards rushing and 683 total yards, rolling into the postseason with only their second 11-0 record in program history.
Michael Zeman continued his torrid second half of the season with 228 yards and two touchdowns while
Brandon Farmer returned to his familiar running back spot and went off for a career-high 141 yards and two scores.
John Matocha threw for four touchdowns on 243 yards as both
Mason Karp (123 yards) and
Josh Johnston (102 yards) went over the century mark, with Johnston catching three touchdowns.
Mines now awaits its NCAA fate on Sunday with the selection show streaming live on NCAA.com at 3 p.m. MT. The Orediggers are the likely #3 seed in Super Region IV, which would put them in line for a home first-round game on Nov. 23.
Mines began with a pass-heavy look as Matocha started out 9-for-9 and threw all four of his touchdowns before halftime, but gradually moved to the run as a steady rain developed along with the lead. Matocha hit Johnston for scores of 13 and 31 yards to start the game before Tevon Wright's two-yard scoring catch made it a 14-7 game after a quarter. In the second, it was
Mason Karp's one-foot-down 18-yard catch that started things off before Johnston scored again from 21 to make it 28-7. Elijah Myles capped off a long CSC drive with a two-yard run, but
Michael Zeman scored two plays later on a 75-yard breakout to make it a 35-14 game at halftime.
Zeman's touchdown sparked a 28-0 run for Mines as Farmer and Zeman combined for three more touchdowns to begin the third quarter. Zeman's 49-yard run set up a five-yard Farmer score to open the half, then a fumble recovered by
Jimmy Bauer put Mines in position for a two-yard Zeman tote seconds later. A quick three-and-out set up Mines again, and Farmer scored on the first play of the series, a 46-yard sprint, to blow the game open at 56-14.
Chadron State scored on a 10-yard Dickerson catch late in the third, but Mines left no doubt in the fourth as the backups got quality minutes.
Dawson Johnson scored his first career touchdown on a three-yard take to open the fourth, and
Nathan Mackey broke loose for a 54-yard score, also his first, to put 70 on the board for the first time this season.
