COLORADO SPRINGS - First-half goals by
Chaney Brugman and
Eliot Edwards carried #16 Colorado School of Mines to an upset of #1 UCCS to lift their eighth RMAC Tournament title of the decade.
The Orediggers (18-2-1) handed the Mountain Lions (19-1-0) their first loss of the season to win their second straight title and take the RMAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Tournament MVP
Shannon Mooney worked her third straight shutout of the tournament with a seven-save effort, including a quick three-save sequence late in the first half that kept it at 2-0.
Giselle Sawaged, Brugman, Edwards,
Nicole LaTourette, and
Lindsey Tornabene also earned all-tournament honors.
Mines had to weather an early period of pressure by UCCS, including a string of four early corners, but slowly turned the tide and drew a corner in the 38th minute. The play bounced around and out of the box to
Mickey Hostetler, who sent it through traffic to a streaking Brugman, who had only the 'keeper to beat as she made it 1-0.
A penalty kick set up by Tornabene drawing a foul in the box gave Mines a 2-0 lead moments later. Edwards stepped up to the spot and took care of business, sending Mines into the half with the two-goal lead.
UCCS, in an unfamiliar spot having to make up ground in the second half, attacked hard, outshooting the Orediggers 12-6 in the period, but the Oredigger defense made sure they would leave the Springs with a trophy. Mooney made four of her seven saves in the second half, including crucial late stops of Taeya Schueppert and Aleesa Muir, and the Mines defense repelled two more shots in the final minute to secure the win.
