Brugman's OT Goal Sends #16 Mines To NCAA Second Round

DALLAS, TEXAS - Chaney Brugman's golden goal and Nicole LaTourette's late equalizer in regulation rescued #16 Colorado School of Mines as they came back to beat St. Edward's, 3-2, and move on to the NCAA Second Round.

LaTourette scored with 4:27 left in regulation to extend the game, and Brugman tallied off a corner kick at 93:12 to overcome two second-half goals by the Hilltoppers.

Up next for the Orediggers is #9 DBU in the second round on Saturday at 1 p.m. Central.

It was a nail-biting back-and-forth game as Mines held a 1-0 lead on Emma Peterson's first-half goal before the Hilltoppers leveled right out of halftime and took the lead after the hour mark. Mines had the better run of play in the first half and it resulted in Peterson's goal in the 33rd minute; Colleen Tyrrell picked a bouncing ball out in the box and sent it forward for Peterson, who slotted the finish home to the near post.

SEU needed only 47 seconds in the second half to score a terrific equalizer as Jenna Lipscomb crossed for a hard Sarah Preston finish, and Eli Chavez scored in the 65th minute to put a reeling Mines behind 2-1.

The Orediggers struggled to mount offense in the final half-hour but finally found their second goal courtesy of Giselle Sawaged and LaTourette in the 86th minute. Sawaged played a ball over the top from midfield for LaTourette, who got behind the defense and scored on the run to make it 2-2; that suddenly swung the momentum in Mines' favor and they would carry it into overtime.

In the extra frame, LaTourette had an early shot nearly go in, but it started a chain of three corner kicks with the final one paying off. The corner from Jordan Barnhart was played short to Kaylee Kennedy, who ran end line and crossed to LaTourette, who one-timed it for Brugman to split a pair of defenders on the line.
