GOLDEN, Colo. - #16 Colorado School of Mines moved on in the RMAC Tournament, controlling their quarterfinal with Fort Lewis in a 3-0 win.
The Orediggers (16-2-1) went ahead early on an own goal then received second-half insurance strikes by
Nicole LaTourette and
Meg Zimmerman as they outshot the Skyhawks (7-7-3) by a 19-5 margin.
Mines moves on to host MSU Denver in Sunday's semifinal round at noon. The Roadrunners tied Dixie State 1-1 but moved on 4-3 in penalty kicks in Friday's other quarterfinal at Stermole Stadium.
The Orediggers got off to a fast start when LaTourette hit the post in the eighth minute, but got on the board seconds later courtesy of a defensive miscue.
Kaylee Kennedy ran endline on the right of goal and crossed it into the six, but the ball caromed off a defender and in for an own goal.
That put the Skyhawks on their back foot, and they put on a period of pressure highlighted by Courtney Wamboldt's hit crossbar in the 14th minute. The Orediggers responded to control the final half-hour, however, and ultimately held 61 percent of the possession in the first half.
The second half was all Mines as they came out firing. LaTourette made it 2-0 with a hard finish of Kennedy's right cross in the 51st minute, and after numerous other opportunities, Zimmerman hit paydirt with a terrific strike of
Zoe Sano's ball in the 86th minute. Mines outshot FLC 14-2 in the second half.
