Mines Hangs On To Beat Simon Fraser, 58-53

HONOLULU - Colorado School of Mines and Simon Fraser got caught up in a defensive battle, but it was the Orediggers who came out on top in a 58-53 win at the Hoops In Hawaii Classic.

The Orediggers (8-3) extended their win streak to six games while snapping the eight-game run of the Clan (8-2), who had beaten #21 Southeastern Oklahoma State on the opening day of the tournament.

Mines blew the game open with an 11-2 run to end the first half up 16 at 34-18, but Simon Fraser refused to quit, chopping away at the deficit in the second half getting as close as three in the closing minutes. Michael Glen put together a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double while Brendan Sullivan led Mines in scoring for the second straight night at 14 points. Both Ben Boone and Mason Baker scored nine.

After a relatively close start to the game saw neither side lead by more than two baskets, Mines caught fire after the under-4 media timeout in the first half. Sullivan started the run at the free throw line before a basket by Glen and more foul shots from Baker extended the run; in less than three minutes, Mines had grown a 22-16 lead into 34-18 at the break.

SFU start the second half red-hot, however, with an 11-2 run to begin the period cutting Mines' lead to 36-29. The Orediggers used Baker's three-point play, a huge Titus Reed three-pointer, and foul shots by Luke Golter to build the advantage back to 10, 44-34, but SFU answered with a 6-2 run to make it 46-40 with 4:13 remaining.

Things only got tighter as two Ben Boone free throws were answered by five straight Clan points, and that made it 53-50 Mines with under two minutes left. The Orediggers shut the door after a timeout though as Kobi Betts, Glen, and Sullivan all made free throws in the final minute to make it 58-50 before a long Jasdeep Singh three at the buzzer set the final score.
