DENVER – The #23-ranked Colorado School of Mines Baseball team used the long ball and solid defense on Friday afternoon to claim a 10-1 victory over Regis at the Regis Baseball Field.
Trevor Kehe and
Jace Selsor both hit dingers for the Orediggers. Selsor finished the season opener 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBI. Kehe also went 3-for-5, just a triple short of hitting for the cycle, while coming across the plate four times and tallying one RBI.
Mikey Gangwish made it a trio of multi-run performances as he scored twice and drove in one more.
Tyler Blomster (4-2) was the winning pitcher for Mines. He lasted 7.0 innings and allowed just one unearned run with seven strikeouts while Regis sprinkled in six hits.
Ian Durgin pitched a shutout eighth inning for the Orediggers, and
Nate Giefer did the same in the ninth inning. Giefer surrendered no hits while Durgin gave up only two.
Mines (14-6, 5-4 RMAC) returned to the win column thanks to a double play, one runner caught stealing and five hits for extra bases. Regis (6-16, 1-8 RMAC) fell victim to three fielding errors and a slew of wild pitches and passed balls. The Orediggers only hit .243 as a team, but slugged .486 as they scored double-digit runs for the eighth time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was Regis striking first in the opening frame, using a Mines miscue on defense to scratch out one unearned run and a 1-0 lead. Kehe provided the Orediggers' response in the top of the third inning with a one-out, solo home run to straightaway left field. That bomb would even the score at 1-1 and Mines would not look back.
In the top of the sixth inning, Kehe led off and reached base thanks to a Rangers' fielding error in left field. Selsor wasted no time giving the Orediggers lead. He took the first pitch he saw out of the park and onto the street beyond the right-field fence, providing Mines a 3-1 advantage. The visitors finished it off with three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. Three of those runs came on passed balls or wild pitches. Defensively, Mines kept Regis at bay with eight consecutive shutout innings.
