Mines Shakes Off ASU, Moves Into RMAC Semis

GOLDEN, Colo. - #12/15 Colorado School of Mines put away Adams State late to win their RMAC Tournament quarterfinal, 82-70, and advance in the bracket as the top seed.

The Orediggers (25-4) will host the semifinals and final of the tournament, and will match up with fourth-seeded Black Hills State Friday at 6 p.m. in their next game. The other semifinal will put third-seeded Regis against seventh-seeded New Mexico Highlands.

Ben Sonnefeld, minted the RMAC Player of the Year earlier in the day, led the charge for Mines with 20 points while Mason Baker added 16 with four assists. The difference for the Orediggers was from beyond the arc as they sank 11 three-pointers to ASU's two, led by Joe Miks' 4-for-6 game off the bench and three trifectas each from Sonnefeld and Michael Glen.

Adams State led as late as the 11:05 mark in the game before Mines embarked on a 19-5 run over the next five minutes to run away in the closing minutes. The game featured 10 ties and eight lead changes.

Mines led 41-37 after a tight first half thanks largely to eight three-pointers in the period, but the Grizzlies began the second half on an 11-4 run to lead 48-45 after a Devere Creighton basket three minutes in. It was a back-and-forth battle over the next several minutes, and Rickey Norris' layup at the 14:08 mark made it a 55-51 ASU lead.

Adams State, however, would not score for the next five minutes as a 7-0 Mines spurt, keyed by a Sonnefeld three-point play, gave them the lead before back-to-back three-pointers by Miks and Luke Golter broke the game open. Baker then scored six straight points to set Mines' largest lead of the game, 70-60, and the Orediggers won going away eventually hitting their largest margin after Sonnefeld's free throws in the closing minute.
