THIS WEEKEND
The Orediggers head back to Regis University this weekend, this time to play the host Rangers in a four-game set. Mines (17-12, 16-5 RMAC) is battling for a top spot in the RMAC standings while Regis (11-14, 8-11 RMAC) is trying to stay in the top eight to make the postseason. All four games will be streamed live on the RMAC Network.
LAST WEEKEND
Mines won three of four games in a pod series with Fort Lewis and UCCS. On Saturday, the Orediggers won a wild 14-8 comeback over UCCS with a six-run sixth inning as
Clara Larson drove in four runs and
Kendall Murphy had the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth. The Orediggers then shut out Fort Lewis 7-0 behind
Claire Stringfellow's dazzling start. On Sunday, Mines again blanked Fort Lewis 5-0, this time behind
Sydney Marchando's gem as Larson was 4-for-4 with three RBI. The lone loss came in the finale as UCCS came back twice to win 5-4 in nine innings; Mines led 3-1 in the seventh and 4-3 in the eighth.
DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN
When the Orediggers step foot on the field this weekend, it'll be a familiar feeling. Mines "hosted" Dixie State on Regis' field just two weeks ago, taking three of four from the Trailblazers in Denver. Mines also was the visiting team against Regis last year as the Rangers took three games in that series.
IN IT TO WIN IT
With four weekends of play left, Mines is still in contention in the RMAC, currently sitting third at 16-5 (.762). Colorado Mesa took over the top spot this week at 20-3 (.870), with two of those losses coming to Mines; Colorado Christian is second at 17-3 (.850). Dixie State is fourth at 17-7 (.708).
LEADING OFF
Mines' success through RMAC play has been largely driven by the top of the lineup's ability to produce runs as the 1-2-3 combo of
Kendall Murphy,
Katie Leiker, and
Clara Larson have combined for 74 of Mines' 148 runs. Out of the leadoff spot, Murphy has been phenomenal as a rookie, sporting a .468 on-base percentage to produce a team-high 29 runs. Her 13 doubles ranks fourth in the RMAC. Leiker, out of the second spot in the order, has a team-high .472 OBP with 23 runs and 12 RBI; Larson has been the hammer batting third, leading Mines with 32 RBI and a .660 slugging percentage.
ON A ROLL
Speaking of
Kendall Murphy, the freshman's remarkable on-base streak continued last weekend as she has reached base in all 28 games of her Mines career. She has also scored a run in six consecutive games.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
The Orediggers have been very good as a team this season in drawing walks, as their rate of 3.27 per game ranks third in the RMAC. Mines is well ahead of its pace from 2018 that saw them draw 2.9 walks per game; this year five players have double-digit passes including
Megan Dickson (14),
Kendall Murphy and
Katie Leiker (13),
Clara Larson (12), and
Kelsey Buechler (11).
IN THE CIRCLE
Mines' starting duo of
Claire Stringfellow and
Sydney Marchando continue to impress this season, as Stringfellow sports a 2.10 ERA and 8-5 record, and Marcahdno is at 2.77 with a 9-3 mark. Both have thrown 80+ innings to this point as Stringfellow has held batters to .266, while Marchando owns a .239 opposing average and leads the staff with 78 strikeouts.
FLASHING THE LEATHER
A year after finishing eighth in the RMAC in team fielding percentage at .944, Mines is the league's most improved defensive team in 2019, currently second at .968. The Orediggers have committed just 27 errors in 841 chances.
