#10 Mines Comes Back To Beat Mesa, 2-1

GOLDEN, Colo. - First-half goals by Jordan Barnhart and Giselle Sawaged helped #10 Colorado School of Mines overcome an early Colorado Mesa strike to win 2-1.

The Orediggers (5-1-0, 2-0-0 RMAC) turned in a terrific defensive performance in the second half as the Mavericks (4-2-0, 1-1-0 RMAC) threatened for an equalizer, ultimately holding CMU to only three shots on goal in the game.

Mesa scored on their first shot of the game and against the run of play as Zoe Peterson launched a spectacular 25-yard effort to the upper far post in the 18th minute. That left Mines in the position of having to play from behind, but it didn't last long as Barnhart equalized in the 33rd minute. The freshman took a free kick from midfield and put it into the box, where it went untouched into the net for her second goal of the year.

Mines wasted no time in building on their momentum as Sawaged put them ahead three minutes later. Another free kick bounced in and out of the box before CMU goalkeeper Kamrie Gunderson mishandled it on the ground, giving Sawaged an opening for a creative backheel to an open net.

The second half saw both sides enjoy periods of sustained pressure and Mines nearly made it 3-1 when Emi Higgins had a one-on-one chance well-saved by Gunderson. The Mavericks controlled the closing minutes but never seriously threatened Mooney, who made both of her saves in the second half.
