Fast Start Helps #9 Mines Beat #10 WWU, 2-1

GOLDEN, Colo. - A top-10 matchup between #9 Colorado School of Mines and #10 Western Washington didn't disappoint as the Orediggers came out on top in an entertaining 2-1 result.

The Orediggers (6-1-0) stunned the Vikings (4-2-0) with two goals inside 17 minutes by Giselle Sawaged and Nicole LaTourette, then played lockdown defense as WWU pressured hard in the second half.

Shannon Mooney was outstanding with five saves in the win. WWU outshot Mines 13-12, with the Orediggers ahead 8-4 at halftime.

Mines started quickly with a fast-paced opening 20 minutes, and an early corner opportunity produced Mines' first goal in the 12th minute. Barnhart's corner bounced around and out to the top of the box to a waiting Sawaged, who had acres of space to blast home the rebound and lead 1-0. The lead doubled five minutes later after a slashing run to the box by Chaney Brugman led to a hard finish by LaTourette to give Mines a dream start up 2-0.

The Vikings began to enjoy more possession toward the end of the half and then poured on the pressure in the second with nine shots. Mines' central defense was lights-out to force the Vikings to operate from the wing, but WWU ultimately broke through on a set piece with 1:49 left in the game when Liv Larson's corner found the head of Emily Nelson to cut the lead to 2-1. It was too little, too late for the visitors however as Mines managed to hold possession in the final minute for the win.
