LAST WEEKEND
Mines went 1-1 in their trip to Utah, falling in a 68-66 heartbreaker to Westminster on Friday, but finishing the weekend with a statement win at #13 Dixie State, 80-79 in overtime. At Westminster, Mines nearly erased a nine-point gap with under three minutes left, but the Griffins hung on for the win; against Dixie State, Mines also had to come from behind as
Kobi Betts' three-pointer with 21 seconds left capped a 9-1 run to force overtime; in the extra frame,
Brendan Sullivan's four-point play gave Mines an early lead before DSU pulled ahead;
Ben Boone's layup with five seconds remaining won it.
BAKER NEARS 1,000 POINTS
Halfway through his junior season,
Mason Baker stands at 976 career points as he stands 24 away from being the next Oredigger to crack the 1,000-point milestone. Baker is averaging a career-high 18.1 points per game this season.
GLEN REPEATS RMAC HONORS
Michael Glen was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight Monday after a standout weekend in Utah. Glen averaged 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game in the weekend set; at Westminster on Friday, Glen had nine rebounds, four blocks, and a steal as he was +10 in 29 minutes; at #13 Dixie State, he helped Mines pull off the overtime upset with six boards, a block, and a steal in a +17 night. He was a team-best +13.5 per game for the weekend.
FROM THE OUTSIDE
Sophomore
Brendan Sullivan has been almost unstoppable from the outside this season, hitting a ridiculous 28-of-43 (.651) three-point attempts through 13 games. Sullivan is averaging a career-high 15.4 points per game as a result. He's already hit more three-pointers this year (28) than in 31 games of his freshman campaign (26), when he shot .338 from beyond the arc.
BOONE BREAKS OUT
Another sophomore poised for a breakout season is
Ben Boone. Starting 13 of 14 games this season, Boone has excelled over the last few weeks averaging 10.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over his last five, compared to his season averages of 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds. Defensively he has been one of Mines' top players with a team-best +7.86 plus/minus per game. His game-winning shot in overtime at Dixie State capped a 14-point, seven-rebound, three-assist performance.
SCOUTING ADAMS STATE [Series: ASU, 90-68]
The Grizzlies enter the weekend 5-8 overall and 3-4 in RMAC play, but are coming off consecutive league wins against Chadron State and MSU Denver. The duo of Kaelin Crane and Juwan Green combine for around 30 points per game, while Green adds 3.6 assists per game. Rickey Norris averages 11 points and 6.4 rebounds a night as well. The two sides meet for the 159th time dating back to 1946-47. Mines has dominated the series in recent years, winning eight of the last 10 and two in a row. Last year, the Orediggers won the regular-season tilt 84-70 in Alamosa, then shook off ASU 82-70 in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals at home behind 20 points from
Ben Sonnefeld and 16 by
Mason Baker.
SCOUTING FORT LEWIS [Series: FLC, 54-34]
After a down season last year, Fort Lewis has roared back with a 10-3 record in 2019-20, although all three losses have been in RMAC play as the Skyhawks are 4-3. They split last weekend at home, beating MSU Denver but losing to Chadron State. Riley Farris is second in the RMAC in scoring at 23.8 points per game and adds 6.0 rebounds a night; Akuel Kot contributes 14.6 points per game while Danny Garrick and Will Wittman are just over 10 ppg. The Skyhawks have the RMAC's #2 scoring offense at 86.2 ppg. Mines and Fort Lewis meet for the 89th time since 1968, and they've had some classics in recent years. The Orediggers' current five-game win streak matches the longest in the series dating back to the 2017 regular-season meeting; Mines won last year 92-79 in Durango going an RMAC-record 24-for-24 at the line behind
Mason Baker's 27 points.
