THE WEEKEND
#9 Colorado School of Mines wraps up the regular season at home this weekend, hosting its dual meet finale Friday night against CSU-Pueblo in Volk Gym before the annual Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open takes place Sunday in Steinhauer Fieldhouse. Friday night's dual will see the Orediggers (8-2, 6-0 RMAC) try to finish off an undefeated RMAC season against the Thunderwolves (4-6, 3-3). Sunday's RMCO will welcome wrestlers from 34 different teams ranging from NJCAA up to NCAA Division I, providing a "last chance" opportunity for teams to work out postseason lineups and get younger wrestlers some mat time.
VYING FOR RMAC SUPREMACY
Mines' win last Friday against #13 Adams State ensured the Orediggers of at least a share of their second consecutive RMAC championship. A win over CSU-Pueblo would give Mines the outright title for the first time in program history. Only Western Colorado (5-1 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa (3-1 RMAC) could potentially tie Mines. Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Orediggers built a big lead and then held off #13 Adams State at Volk Gym last Friday to win 23-18. Mines won the first five bouts before the Grizzlies came back to win the next five; it was bonus points, powered by pins from #12
Anderson Salisbury and #4
Weston Hunt and a
Nolan Funk technical fall, that made the difference. #6
Skyler Lykins and #2
Robert Gambrell also scored wins by decision.
IN THE POLLS
In the last NWCA poll on Jan. 22, Mines cracked the top 10 for the first time in program history with the #9 team tournament ranking. Mines individuals made big jumps in the rankings as well as
Robert Gambrell moved up one spot to #2 at 174 pounds, while
Weston Hunt went up three places to #4 at 285 pounds and
Skyler Lykins had a six-spot leap to #6 at 165. Earning his first career ranking was
Anderson Salisbury, who debuted at #12 at 184 pounds. CSUP is receiving votes in the top 25 and has ranked individuals in #11 D'Andre Brumfield (133) and #12 Gavin Nye (285).
LAST YEAR VS. CSU-PUEBLO
Mines will hope to avenge their only RMAC loss of last season, a 23-11 defeat to then-#7 CSU-Pueblo.
Noah Ottum,
Robert Gambrell, and
Weston Hunt all had wins (Gambrell's via tech fall) for Mines. This year's dual anticipates rematches at 133 (
Jake Woods vs. D'Andre Brumfield, won by Brumfield last year) and at heavyweight, where
Weston Hunt upset then-#4 Gavin Nye 3-2.
LEADING THE WAY
Heading into the final weekend of the regular season,
Anderson Salisbury leads the team in wins at 19-6 with
Skyler Lykins second at 17-3. Lykins boasts the team's best dual record (9-1) and has the most wins versus D-II opponents (15-3). He also leads the team with 33 dual points, while Salisbury leads the team in tech falls (4) and co-leads in major decisions with
Nolan Funk and Lykins at 4. Woods, Funk, and
Weston Hunt co-lead the team with five falls each.
Carter Noehre owns the season's fastest fall at 0:23.
WHAT'S AHEAD
