GAME 1 - FORT LEWIS 7, MINES 6 (9 inn.)
Fort Lewis outlasted Colorado School of Mines in a see-saw 7-6 nine-inning game to start Sunday.
The game saw the two teams combined for 26 hits, 15 by Mines, and five runs in extra innings before Fort Lewis held on to win.
Renata Boyd led all players with three hits, while four other Orediggers -
Clara Larson,
Sam Wade,
Megan Dickson, and
Lauren Decker - had two-hit games. Mines was hurt by five errors as just three of FLC's seven runs were earned.
An error put FLC on the board in the second before Mines returned the favor with Dickson's run off a miscue to tie it up in the bottom half. Larson tripled in Boyd and Wade singled home Larson to make it a 3-1 lead in the third, but the Skyhawks responded with a three-run fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Wade's double in the fifth scored Boyd, and that would be the final run of regulation as the game went to extras. Both teams scored in the eighth, first when Sloan Shotton came home on a double steal for Fort Lewis and then as
Stefanie Brunello extended the game with a two-out double to the gap to bring in
Kelsey Buechler.
In the ninth, three straight Skyhawk hits led to two runs and a 7-5 lead; Mines came close in the bottom half as
Kylie Redding drove in Wade, but the Orediggers ultimately left the bases loaded.
Both teams combined three pitchers each; Brianna Leavell went seven for FLC, with reliever Kendra Keahbone (1-0) earning the win in 1.2 innings of relief and Mandy Lorsenson getting the save with one out in the ninth.
Sydney Marchando took no decision in 4.1 innings of work, allowing zero earned on three runs.
Lauren Decker (0-2) was charged with the loss in four innings of relief, while
Claire Stringfellow got the final two outs in the ninth.
GAME 2 - FORT LEWIS 6, MINES 4
A four-run seventh inning gave Fort Lewis a 6-4 comeback win over Mines to wrap up the series.
The Orediggers carried a 4-2 lead into the seventh before the Skyhawks' big rally. Brianna Leavell and Sloan Shotton each had two RBI for FLC; Mines was led at the plate by two-hit games for
Sam Wade and
Kylie Redding.
Redding's single in the second scored
Sam Wade, but Shotton's double down the line allowed Pilar Guitierrez to score and make it a 1-1 game in the top of the third. Mines quickly retook the lead in their next at-bat as
Clara Larson doubled home
Renata Boyd.
The Orediggers padded their lead with a two-run fifth thanks to RBI singles from
Sydney Marchando and Wade, but the Skyhawks chipped away with Shotton's solo homer in the sixth to make it 4-2. In the seventh, McKenna Hefley's double to score Gutierrez sparked their rally, with Leavell's two-run homer putting the Skyhawks ahead and Kelly Decker later scoring on a wild pitch. Mines threatened in the seventh with two baserunners, but a line-out double play ended the game.
Mandy Lorenson (2-3) went the distance with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
Claire Stringfellow allowed one earned run in 5.1 innings of work and departed with the lead in the sixth.
Kylie Redding (2-1) was charged with the loss in an inning of relief as
Sadriena Rodriguez got the final two outs in the seventh.
