#18 Mines Edges #21 CMU In Final Match

GOLDEN, Colo. - Weston Hunt's pin at 285 pounds broke a tie score and helped #18 Colorado School of Mines get past #21 Colorado Mesa, 24-18, in their RMAC opener on Saturday.

The Orediggers (2-0) and Mavericks (4-4) wrestled a back-and-forth thriller, with the lead changing hands four times over the final six bouts. Although Hunt's pin sealed the victory, it was set up #6 Anderson Salisbury's 12-4 major decision against #7 Nolan Krone at 184 after earlier bonus-point wins by Noah Ottum and Zach Krause got Mines rolling.

CMU reeled off three straight wins to start the day as Cian Apple beat Jake Stogdill, 6-3, at 125, Collin Metzgar blanked Gabe Martinez 5-0 at 133, and Danial Magana won a defensive battle with Wes Rayburn 5-1 at 141.

Things turned for Mines starting at 149 as Ottum dominated Erik Contreras in a third-period tech fall, 23-7, producing four takedowns and three near-falls in the win. Mines then took the lead when Krause used a reversal into a 1:39 pin against Dyllan Fuchs at 157.

The 165-pound bout featured two ranked grapplers as #5 Fred Green turned in a major decision, 14-4, over #11 Skyler Lykins, but Ryan Fidel picked up his second big win in as many weeks, shutting out 2020 NCAA qualifier Seth Latham 4-0 at 174. Salisbury then came up huge in another top-10 battle as he majored Krone 12-4 to give Mines an 18-13 lead.

CMU ensured it would come down the final bout as two men who qualified for nationals last year, Donnie Negus and Nolan Funk, battled at 197 with Negus earning a 20-4 tech fall; that left it up to Hunt, who dominated from the start against Kash Anderson with a 10-0 first-period lead before selecting top and turning Anderson for the pin at 3:31.

NOTABLES
- It was Mines' third straight win over the Mavericks.
- The Orediggers ran their RMAC dual winning streak to nine in a row dating back to 2018-19. 
- Hunt improved to 49-19 in his career as he eyes the 50-win milestone. He is also took sole possession of 10th on the Mines career falls list at 17.
- Both of Zach Krause's wins this season have been by fall.
- Ottum leads the team with 11 duals points in two outings.
