COLORADO SPRINGS - Colorado School of Mines opened its 2021-22 schedule with a tri-meet against Division I foes Air Force and Nebraska-Omaha Friday night.
The men nearly knocked off Omaha in a 143-141 scoreline, with Air Force winning their head-to-head 190-86. The women's scores were 203-87 head-to-head with UNO and 194-79 against the Falcons. Air Force won both sides of its dual with UNO in the tri-meet format.
The men's team's depth nearly helped them beat UNO, and
Scott Reeder's win in the 1000-free highlighted the meet as he swam 10:20.57 to win by three seconds. Mines went 2-3-4 in the 200-breast thanks to
Nick Delany (2:13.23),
Gavin Gilmore (2:16.47), and
Jack Engler (2:16.65), and they did it again in the 500-free with
Joe Peak (4:56.03),
Ronan Lauinger (4:56.32), and Reeder (4:59.73).
The Orediggers had multiple other top finishes including
Charles Burroughs' second-place 1:55.56 time in the 200-fly, and
Garrett Waite scoring a second-place 1:58.00 in the 200-backstroke a spot ahead of
Jarod Schahrer in 2:00.33; Waite was also third in the 100-back in 53.01.
Connor Wong took third in the 100-fly in 52.27,
Braden Whitmarsh was third in the 200-IM (1:57.42) and fourth in the 200-free (1:45.78).
Braden Hunt was sixth in the 100-free in 48.51,
Jack Engler was the top Oredigger in the 100-breast at 1:00.37 for sixth, and
Michael Kietzman was sixth in 21.62 in the 50-free.
Among the veterans leading the way for the Mines women,
Jorie Selig placed third in the 100-breaststroke in 1:08.38 and repeated that performance with a 54.13 in the 100-free, and
Maddie Finley swam 25.00 flat for third in the 50-free.
Erin Taggart was third in the 200-breast (2:31.94), fourth in the 100-fly (1:02.58), and fourth in the 200-fly in 2:15.09, while and
Sam Henney was fifth in the 200-back in 2:13.63.
Two freshmen were top Orediggers in their events, including
Isabella Bono, who placed third in the 1000-free in 11:07.55, and
Olivia Kisow, who placed third in the 500-free in 5:23.41, fourth in the 200-free at 1:58.17, and fourth in the 200-IM in 2:16.42.

The Oredigger women host Colorado State and University of Mary Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The men are back in action next weekend in a two-day meet at Colorado Mesa.
