COLORADO SPRINGS - #9 UCCS scored twice in the first half and #20 Colorado School of Mines couldn't catch up despite a positive second half as the Mountain Lions advanced 2-0 in the NCAA Second Round.
The Orediggers end their season at 13-5-4; the Mountain Lions (19-3) advance to the Sweet 16 to take on DBU in the regional final.Â
UCCS struck twice in the first half, first on a corner in the 26th minute when Makayla Merlo tucked her shot inside the left post. Tarah Patterson doubled the lead five minutes later with a shot to the far post from the left.
Mines upped its offensive possession in the second half and had its two best chances in the 78th minute when
Ellise Putnam fired just left of goal, then hit the crossbar a minute later. The Orediggers outshot UCCS 4-2 in the half but ultimately couldn't solve the Mountain Lion defense.

- Putnam, who had the golden goal in Friday's first round win over Midwestern State, co-led Mines with two shots off the bench.
Laura Butler also had two in 70 minutes on the midfield wing.Â
