Doubleheader Gets Away from Mines in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against #5-ranked Colorado Mesa on Saturday by scores of 9-1 and 22-4 at Sam Suplizio Field

Wayne Moeck remained as Mines' biggest source of offense. The true freshman continued his tear, batting .500 with two runs and two RBI. Nash Neff added a home run for the Orediggers as his lone hit on the day. Danny McDermott and I-Ly Hsue also had multiple hits over the course of two games. On the mound, starters Ben Schoneman (0-1) and Marcus Lee (0-2) took the losses. However, Gavan Black Burn and Cannon Sims both walked away with 0.00 ERAs in a combined 3.1 innings of relief. Capping it off was Brady Veltien and Kevin Zapanta combining for nine strikeouts off the bump over 4.2 innings total.

Mines (0-7, 0-7 RMAC) saw a slight boost from its offense, hitting .200 for the first time since its season opener. However, seven errors proved detrimental to the Orediggers' efforts. Colorado Mesa (8-1, 5-0) ended the day hitting .458 as a team while the Mavericks' pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts and a 1.93 ERA overall. Mines' skid extends to seven straight loses while CMU extends is streak to eight consecutive wins and remains atop the RMAC standings.

GAME ONE: #5 Colorado Mesa 9, Mines 1
The first game of the day and second of the series played out in similar fashion to the weekend opener. Mines found itself in an early hole due to CMU's two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Another two-run shot for the home team made the score 4-0 before the Orediggers could respond. McDermott broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI, infield single. However, insurance runs for the Mavericks and quality pitching removed any chance for a comeback by the visitors.

GAME TWO: #5 Colorado Mesa 22, Mines 5
Mines saw its offense gain life in the second game of the day as the visitors scored first in the opening frame. A sacrifice fly from Moeck brought in Hsue to give the Orediggers a 1-0 lead. Neff's home run came in the second inning and another run in the third made it three straight frames of scoring for Mines. Much to the chagrin of the visitors, Mesa maintained its production on offense and dropped eight runs in the first and fourth innings with some insurance in between.  Moeck accounted for the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning as well, but it was academic as CMU clinched the victory.

NOTABLES
- Neff's home run was the first of his career.
- Veltien's appearance in relief marked his collegiate debut.
- Moeck now boasts a .429 batting average with two runs and seven RBI on nine hits including five doubles. All of that in six starts.
- Head Coach Robby Bales is 51-28 in his third year as head coach for the Orediggers.
