DURANGO, Colo. - #13 Colorado School of Mines overcame an early penalty kick by Fort Lewis to earn a 2-1 road victory on Thursday.
Emma Peterson scored near the end of the first half and
AK Ford provided the winner 3:42 into the second as Mines came back from 1-0 down. The Skyhawks (2-1-2, 1-1-0 RMAC) were dealt their first loss of the season despite outshooting the Orediggers (5-0-2, 3-0-1 RMAC) 12-11.
Fort Lewis was the better team in the opening minutes, ringing the post and putting two other shots on goal during a long period of possession before earning a penalty in the 23rd minute on a foul in the box, and Corinne Sanderson converted for the 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks continued to pepper Mines' goal including another hit crossbar by Aubrey Swindle at the half-hour mark, but the Orediggers slowly began building momentum and it paid off with Peterson's 38th-minute equalizer off a pinpoint creation forward by
Michelle Easley.
Moments into the second half,
Eliot Edwards was sprung on a breakaway that was stopped by a charging Katie Dunbabin at the top of the box, but Ford pounced on the rebound and chipped into the open net for the go-ahead goal. The Orediggers had better control of the game from there, holding FLC primarily to long-range efforts while outshooting the Skyhawks 7-6 in the half.
Sierra Roth made a career-high six saves in the victory; Dunbabin stopped five for the Skyhawks.
