Marchant Helps Mines Upset #11 Seattle Pacific

SEATTLE– Less than one minute into overtime, George Marchant helped the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team complete their comeback victory at #11 Seattle Pacific.
 
Marchant finished the game with the game-winning goal and one assist as Mines finished their rally while playing a man down. Tristan Semelsberger did his part with one goal and one assist as well. John Burnett started the comeback with the first goal of his collegiate career. Lucas King and Greyson Adams Checked in with the assists on the game-winning goal.
 
The Orediggers (4-2-0) overcame a 22-8 shot deficit, but put nine shots on goal compared to eight shots on goal for Seattle Pacific (3-1-0). Alex Mejia and Alden Massey were the Falcons' goal scorers. Brian Doherty and Kenneth Symmes split the duties in goal for Mines with Symmes claiming the win. Each of Mines' goalkeepers made two saves. It marks the Orediggers' second victory over a top-25 opponent this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines entered Saturday's matchup with nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific smarting from a 1-0 loss to Western Washington due to a late Vikings' goal. After 72 minutes of action in Seattle, the Orediggers found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit against the #11-ranked team in the nation. The visitors proceeded to run off three goals in 13 minutes to score the comeback victory.
 
The true freshman Burnett started the comeback with a strike in the 79th minute thanks to an assist from Semelsberger. Then, in the 85th minute, Semelsberger found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Marchant. That equalizer pushed the match into extra time, but free soccer wouldn't last long. At the 90:39 mark, Marchant knocked in the game-winning goal thanks to a double assist from Adams and King and Mines came back from the Pacific Northwest with a big nationally-ranked victory.
 
NOTABLES
- Mines improved to 3-1-0 in the all-time series against Seattle Pacific.
- The Orediggers own two wins over nationally-ranked opponents in 2021.
- In the spring, Mines rallied from a 3-0 deficit against CSU Pueblo to earn a 3-3 tie before winning the league and the conference tournament title.
- Marchant's points were his first of the season including the second goal and second assist of his career.
- Semelsberger boosted his total to three on the season and 12 in his career. The senior also touts five assists in four years thanks to his first in the fall of 2021.
- King is now tied with Semelsberger for the team lead in scoring in the fall of 2021 after his fifth assist of the season. King touts one goal and five assists. He boasts 21 assists in his career at Mines.
- Head Coach Greg Mulholland now holds a career record of 60-12-7 at the helm.
