GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Women's Soccer team used two first-half goals on Thursday afternoon to earn a season-opening victory against Simon Fraser at Stermole Stadium.
Starters
Reese McDermott and
Meg Zimmerman accounted for the tallies while
Landry Corbett chipped in an assist on the game-winner. McDermott and Zimmerman finished the match with a combined three shots including two shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Sierra Roth played all 90 minutes and needed just one save to earn the shutout and the victory. Additionally,
Emma Peterson,
Ava Harman,
Meg Zimmerman,
Amena Nelson and
Cloey Seltzer put shots on goal.
As a team, Mines (1-0-0) found itself relatively unchallenged as the Orediggers limited Simon Fraser (0-1-0) to just three shot attempts. On offense, the home squad took 13 shots and put nearly half of those on goal with six attempts inside the frame. Thursday's win gives Mines four straight victories on opening day – a streak that dates back to 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers first goal of the fall did not take long. In fact, it took McDermott less than five minutes of play in her first collegiate game, making her first collegiate start, to score her first collegiate goal. The freshman struck four minutes and 44 seconds into the match on a long throw-in from Corbett. McDermott took advantage of the scrum in the penalty area and deflected the ball to the left post away from the frozen SFU goalkeeper.
Mines grabbed its second goal 34 minutes later. The Orediggers earned a corner kick which bounced to the top of the 18-yard box. It was there Zimmerman sent a one-touch rocket through a pack of defenders and attackers to the back of the net, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage. It was a margin that would hold through the remaining 50-plus minutes as Simon Fraser packed in the defense while playing with 10 players over the final 40 minutes.
