GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines and #25 Western Washington battled to a scoreless draw in an enthralling non-conference meeting at Stermole Stadium.
The Mines backline was instrumental in the result as both
Ava Harman and
Katie Koehler cleared shots off the line, while
Sierra Roth made five saves in the shutout.
The Vikings (1-0-1) controlled the possession in the first half while the Orediggers (1-0-1) made more from their counterattacking opportunities, outshooting WWU 8-3 in the period. The second half had a noticable sense of urgency for both sides as the Vikings increased the pressure, and they nearly won it with a wild sequence late in regulation. WWU drew a corner in the 86th minute that produced a Grace Eversaul shot that was saved off the line by Harman, before Dayana Diaz's putback attempt caromed off the crossbar.
In overtime, Mines' defense again stepped up as Koehler denied Tera Ziemer at the goal line, and the Orediggers countered with their best scoring opportunity of the game as
Amena Nelson fired just right of the post on a breakaway opportunity. Both teams had a pair of shots in the second overtime but none threatened to win the match.
