GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines improved to 2-0 in RMAC play, dispatching New Mexico Highlands 4-1 at Stermole Stadium on Sunday.
The Orediggers (5-1-2, 2-0-0 RMAC) had just about everything go wrong in a 1-1 first half, but responded with a strong second 45 minutes that included three goals to win the match.
Emma Peterson had the go-ahead goal plus an assist, while
Eliot Edwards scored in the first half and
Katie Koehler and
Hannah Rowan added late goals.
Mines outshot the Cowgirls (0-4-0, 0-2-0 RMAC) by a 23-9 margin and showed their aggressive counterattacking style with 11 offsides and numerous breakaway opportunities. That type of play led to the Orediggers' opening goal as
Landry Corbett's run up the left resulted in a cross into the box for Edwards, who slotted home for her second goal of the season at 11:34.
Four minutes later, an unlucky handball in the box gave the Cowgirls a penalty kick, and Valeria Baca converted a superb take to the upper-left corner to level at 1-1. Barely a minute later,
Jordan Barnhart drew a foul in the box at the other end to give Mines their own spot kick, but Edwards' attempt hit the post.
The Orediggers turned on the gas in the second half with 17 shots after the break, and after several attempts were just off target, Peterson headed home
Gracey Henoch's cross in the 54th minute to give Mines the lead. A Peterson free kick in the 71st minute was deflected in by Koehler, and Rowan scored on a breakaway in the 76th minute to cap the 4-1 match.
