Second-Half Comeback Sends Mines Past ASU

ALAMOSA, Colo. - A huge second-half comeback lifted Colorado School of Mines to its sixth straight win, beating Adams State 77-71 on the road.

The Orediggers (11-7, 9-5 RMAC) trailed by 14 in the second half but hit a monster 17-0 run to take the lead and win paced by Justin Engesser's career-high 24 points.

The Mines bench produced a season-high 50 points led by Engesser, but Kai Barr's 12 points and Grant Pressly's career-high 10 added punch as the Orediggers made a big turnaround to shooting .654 in the second half after a dismal .351 pace in the first.

The Grizzlies were led by Jordan Notch's 23 points, and Kaelin Crane added 17. ASU shot .476 for the game.

Mines never led in the first half as they were one for their first ten shots, and the Grizzlies built up a lead as big as 11 just before halftime before a 5-0 run to end the period on a jumper by Trent Dykema and Riley Schroeder's three-pointer made it 38-32 ASU.

Both teams started the second half on fire but it was Adams State's outside shooting that helped it pull away, with Rylan O'Brien's three-pointer making it a 14-point lead, 57-43, at the 13:54 mark. Mines slowly began to chip away starting with an Engesser three, and after a Notch jumper made it 61-50 with 11:59 left, Mines embarked on its big run, scoring 17 consecutive points and holding ASU scoreless for 6:02 to flip the game into a 67-61 lead after Pressly's steal and score with 6:22 to go.

From there it was a matter of hanging on as Pressly and Barr came up with buckets, Engesser hit two key late free throws, and Barr punctuated the win with a fastbreak jam in the closing seconds.

NOTABLES
- Engesser's 24 points marked his most as an Oredigger and tied his overall career high set against Dallas Baptist in the 2018-19 season while playing at Colorado Christian. He was 9-of-12 overall including four three-pointers, and he added seven rebounds to his night.
- After scoring only four points through his first eight appearances this season, Pressly is averaging 5.5 points per game over the last four including his career high 10 tonight.
- Mines had a 30-28 rebounding edge led by Barr's eight.
- Brendan Sullivan had a quiet nine points but had four assists, two blocks, and a steal; his biggest block came on a three-point attempt in the final minute to dash any hopes of an ASU comeback.
