COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado School of Mines Men's Swimming team took down NCAA Division I Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night at Cadet Natorium as the Oredigger men's and women's teams opened the 2022-23 season with some impressive performances at the Air Force Triangular.

The final team scores from the triangular included Mines' men edging Omaha, 137.0-105.0 while falling to the host Falcons, 160.0-83.0. The Oredigger women fell to Air Force by a score of 204.5-38.5 with Omaha's women winning that matchup, 152.5-82.5. Despite some of the margins, plenty of highlights abounded.

Three big highlights for Mines' men included true freshman
Luca Burns in the 100-back,
Garrett Waite in the 100-free and the quartet of
Braden Hunt, Waite,
Seth Krause and
Michael Kietzman in the 200-freestyle relay. Burns won the men's 100-back with a time of 51.51 in a field of 13 swimmers. He also swam as part of the 200-medley relay and the second 200-freestyle relay which touched fifth and third, respectively. Waite won the 100-free with a time of 47.18, and raced as part of the second-place, 200-medley relay and the 200-free relay. The top 200-free relay including Waite finished second to earn big points and help Mines take down the Mavericks who finished fourth in the event.

On the women's side,
Meghan Slowey came up huge with a comeback win the 1000-free. She finished four seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer from Air Force with a time of 11:00.0 flat. Slowey also competed in the 200-free and 500-free. Additional women's highlights included the 200-medley relay in the first event of the night. The quartet of
Emi Jedryka, Jordan Tierny,
Annie Osmun, and
Jorie Selig touched #2 at a 1:48.24 clip. Osmun was also big in the 100-free, racing to #2 in 53.41. Jedryka posted a strong 100-back by finishing #3.
Cameryn Schmidt had a top-three finish in the 100-breast as well.

Additional notable swims for the men featured
Michael Kietzman in the 200-free,
Jake Sherman in the 1000-free, Krause in the 50-free,
Ronan Lauinger and Joshua Lee in the 400-IM, and Joseph Peak in the 100-fly. Joining Waite in the 100-free were Dominic Delany and
Braden Hunt going #3 and #4. Krause was not far behind Burns in the 100-back, finishing #3.
Braden Whitmarsh touched #3 and took #2 points in the 500-free with Lauinger right behind. Â

Mines' women continue opening weekend on Saturday as they host the Mines Triangular with Colorado State and New Mexico State coming to Golden.
