GOLDEN, Colo. – Football's
Jack Peterson and volleyball's
Drew Stokes have been selected as the Fall 2022 President's Senior Scholar-Athletes.
Awarded twice annually prior to the May and December commencement ceremonies, the prestigious accolade is given to one male and one female undergraduate student-athlete who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the leadership qualities of an exemplary student-athlete. Peterson is earning his degree in mechanical engineering, and Stokes is finishing her degree in environmental engineering.
Peterson came to Mines from Fort Collins and has been part of an incredible era of success for Mines football as a four-time RMAC champion. Jack is a two-time all-RMAC selection at defensive tackle and is a leader on one of the nation's best defenses over the last several years. Mines has led the nation in sacks each of the last two years and Jack has been a huge part of that with 10 sacks and 19 tackles for loss overall in his career. This season as the Orediggers are headed to the national championship game this weekend for the first time in program history, Jack has 40 tackles, nine sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. He is a CSC Academic All-District honoree this year as well as First-Team Academic All-RMAC and will be a three-time National Football Foundation First-Team Academic All-Colorado selection as well. During his career, Mines Football is 47-7 with four NCAA tournament appearances, and Jack has been a big part of the success on the field.
Stokes arrived at Colorado School of Mines by way of Murphysboro, Ill., in 2018 and immediately became the starting setter for the Oredigger volleyball team. Over the next five years, Drew appeared in every single match for Mines and all but two sets on her way to becoming the most-decorated player in program history while also earning a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering and pursuing a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering. During her tenure, Drew rose the ranks to #1 on the Orediggers' all-time assists list and #4 on the all-time service aces list. She closed her career with 5,899 assists, 1,003 digs, 392 kills, 199 total blocks, and 131 service aces. Those numbers made her a four-time AVCA All-American, a D2CCA First-Team All-American, National Freshman of the Year, five-time First-Team All-RMAC and four-time RMAC Setter of the Year as well as a two-time RMAC Tournament MVP. With Stokes in an Oredigger uniform, Mines won four RMAC Championships and advanced to four NCAA Tournaments including a run to the NCAA South Central Region final. Drew will leave Golden, Colo., with the name Stokes listed more than 20 times in the program record book.
Mines winter commencement ceremonies will be held Thursday (graduate) and Friday (undergraduate) at Lockridge Arena with 42 student-athletes earning undergraduate or graduate degrees.
