GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A new program record and numerous Orediggers into finals highlighted the opening session of the 2022 RMAC Swimmung & Diving Championships at Colorado Mesa.
Charles Burroughs snapped the Mines 200-IM record, and Mines put 19 through to Wednesday night's finals plus two more in the 1000-free timed finals.
Wednesday night finals begin at 5 p.m.
200-IM
Charles Burroughs set the new Mines standard in the 200-IM, swimming a 1:50.50 prelim to qualify third for finals. His time bested Jonathan Donehower's 1:50.79 mark set at the 2019 conference meet, and is an NCAA B time.
Braden Whitmarsh also made it into the "A" final with a 1:54.31 time to qualify eighth. "B" final qualifiers include
Jack Engler (1:55.19),
Gavin Gilmore (1:55.58), and
Nick Delany (1:55.89);
Jarod Schahrer had a final-level time swimming in exhibition at 1:53.92, Max Waring swam 1:57.12, and
Nathan O'Neil 2:01.14, all in exhibition.
Two Oredigger women are into the 200-IM "A" final as
Olivia Kisow swam a 2:08.78 prelim to qualify fourth and
Erin Taggart 2:12.70 to qualify eighth.
Jess Engel is the fastest time into the "B" final with a 2:13.32 and
Sophia Buhr (2:14.88) and
Ava Burger (2:15.38) will join her.
Claire Lautman finished 21st (2:19.04).
50-FREESTYLE
Garrett Waite and
Harry Smith both swam NCAA B times to qualify for the men's 50-free final as Waite just missed out on Smith's program record in 20.49 and Smith swam 20.55 to place third and fourth, respectively. The "B" final will have
Seth Krause (20.96),
Braden Hunt (20.99), and
Michael Kietzman (21.06).
Sam LaPrade (17th, 21.24) and
Robert Clayton (18th, 21.37) are the finals alternates. In exhibition,
Owen Nord swam 21.34,
Connor Wong 22.00, and Waring 22.16.
For the women,
Maddie Finley swam 24.03 to qualify third and defending champion
Jorie Selig was a spot behind in 24.08 to qualify for the "A" final.
Annie Osmun's 24.41 and
Maggie Wells' 24.48 times qualified for the "B" final, while
Emma Neuroth finished 21st in 25.13
1000-FREESTYLE
Timed finals in the 1000-free saw all but the fastest heat go in the morning and the Oredigger men dominated the morning with the five top times.
Ronan Lauinger was fastest in the early heats in 9:43.62 ahead of
Jaron O'Grady (9:48.69),
Scott Reeder (9:55.50),
Josh Lee (10:04.72), and
Henry Oberley (10:13.77);
Andres Saa swam 9:46.81 and
Austin Rich 9:57.23 in exhibition.
Sam Henney swam 11:11.88 to currently sit seventh with
Rachel Fontan 10th in 11:19.04 and
Hunter Stewart 12th in 11:24.89. Defending champion
Meghan Slowey and
Isabella Bono will be in the women's fast heat.
