DENVER, Colo. - MSU Denver took two from Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, winning the opener 4-3 in a walkoff before breaking the game open late to win the nightcap 6-2.
Renata Boyd produced out of the leadoff spot going 3-for-4 in both games to take her career hits total to 99, and she also drove in a run in the second game.
Emilee Sloan and
Sidney Wilson had Mines' other RBI.
The doubleheader was a non-conference date between the two teams, who are not scheduled to meet in RMAC play this season.
GAME 1 - MSU DENVER 4, MINES 3
Hannah DiFabio's walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh handed MSU Denver a 4-3 comeback win to open the doubleheader.
The Orediggers had more hits than the Roadrunners (nine to eight) and never trailed until the final hit, taking an early 2-0 lead led by the multi-hit games of Boyd and
Sara Larson.
Larson gave Mines the lead in the second inning when her single combined with an error by the centerfielder to plate
Kayleigh Krueger, and Larson later moved around to third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 2-0.
An error on a stolen base got MSU Denver on the board in the third as Trish Leins came across, and Ari Valdez's home run to lead off the fifth tied the game 2-2. Mines retook the lead in the top of the sixth when
Emilee Sloan drove in Krueger in a two-out, two-on situation, but the Roadrunners immediately got the run back on Mackenzie Jamieson's pinch-hit RBI in the bottom half of the inning.
In the seventh, MSU Denver quickly loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, walk, and single, and that left it for DiFabio to hit a single to right field for the win.
Mines threw a staff game with three of its pitchers -
Cassidy Chvatal,
Taylor Wayne, and
Lauren Decker - getting two-inning chinks of the game, with
Sadriena Rodriguez (1-3) being charged with the loss pitching the seventh. Audrey Burt threw five innings for the Roadrunners and had no decision with Julia Heitz (3-1) earning the win allowing one run in two innings of relief.
GAME 2 - MSU DENVER 6, MINES 2
MSU Denver's three-run fifth inning broke the game open and led them to a 6-2 victory under the lights at Assembley Athletic Complex.
The Orediggers were again led by
Renata Boyd's 3-for-4 game out of the leadoff spot and
Lauren Decker followed her with two hits. Shelby Robb was 3-for-4 for the Roadrunners and both Ari Valdez and Jaiden Geist had a pair of RBI.
Mines got on the board first once again as
Sidney Wilson's flyout scored Boyd in the first, but Valdez's solo home run, her second of the day, tied it 1-1 in the second.
The Roadrunners chipped away with runs in the third and fourth as Robb singled in one before Rebecca Gonzales doubled in another to lead 3-1, and the game was put out of reach in the fifth thanks to Valdez's RBI single and a two-run triple from Geist to go up 6-1.
Mines tried to mount a rally in the seventh as
Cassidy Chvatal collected her first career hit and later scored on Boyd's rip to center, but the Orediggers stranded two in their final at-bat as reliever Sara Norton got the final out.
Destinee Lopez (6-3) had the win for MSU Denver. Mines again threw a four-pitcher staff outing with
Sadriena Rodriguez (1-4) being hooked with the loss throwing the second and third innings.
