GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines hit multiple milestones on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Fort Lewis on Saturday.
Cassidy Chvatal made her first career home run a grand slam to help her own pitching performance in game one, while
Renata Boyd had her 100th career hit and
Sadriena Rodriguez dazzled in the best start of her career to win game two as the Orediggers (9-17, 9-7 RMAC) got on the right side of .500 in conference play with the victories.
GAME 1 - COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES 9, FORT LEWIS 7
Cassidy Chvatal's grand slam and eight strikeouts keyed the Orediggers' first win of the day as they held off a late Fort Lewis charge in a 9-7 victory.
Mines never trailed after a three-run first inning, with
Sidney Wilson,
Sara Larson, and Chvatal producing two-hit games.
Wilson, Larson, and
Hannah Roberts all pushed runs across in the first, but Fort Lewis answered with a three-run, error-extended third inning to tie the game 3-3. The Orediggers almost immediately retook the lead as Chvatal came up with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the third and grooved a first-pitch bomb to center field for the grand slam and 7-3 lead.
Mines poured on runs in the fourth as Wilson scored on an error and Larson's sacrifice fly plated
Kayleigh Krueger to lead 9-3. Cat Rodman's leadoff home run in the sixth got the Skyhawks going and sparked a three-run inning as Taya Opheim and Alex Tenorio added RBI singles, and Rodman picked up her second RBI of the game on a groundout in the seventh to bring in Breanna Baca.
Chvatal (3-5) allowed six runs but four unearned as she whiffed eight on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Taylor Wayne picked up her first career save with 1.1 innings of relief. Amiee Shanks (4-5) took the loss allowing nine runs with seven earned.
Catcher
Kailey Morales had her first collegiate hit on a single in the third.
GAME 2 - COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES 7, FORT LEWIS 0
Sadriena Rodriguez's one-hit shutout powered Mines to a 7-0 win over Fort Lewis in Saturday's second game.
Renata Boyd collected her 100th career hit with a leadoff infield single in the first, while
Lauren Decker,
Sara Larson, and
Lexie Semeyn collected two-hit games. Larson and
Hannah Roberts each had two RBI.
Rodriguez (2-4) was nearly untouchable as she struck out seven and walked none in the game. The junior carried a no-hitter into the fifth before Cara Daughtery had the Skyhawks' only hit of the game on a single up the middle. The win was Rodriguez's second complete-game shutout of the season and her career-low in hits allowed.
The game was scoreless until a two-error third inning helped Mines put five runs on the board. With two on and two out, Larson tripled to the warning track in left to plate two runs, then scored on a throwing error back to the infield to make it 3-0. Roberts then walked and scored on Semeyn's RBI triple, and Semeyn walked across on a wild pitch moments later to lead 5-0. In the fifth,
Sidney Wilson's single and a Larson double put two on for Roberts to drive in with her single to right.
Hailie Mann (1-9) allowed seven runs but only two earned off nine hits for the Skyhawks.
