POMONA, Calif. – Oredigger graduate student
Tristan Semelsberger scored both goals on Thursday night in a 2-2 draw between the #20 Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team and #5 Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Stadium.
Both of Semelsberger's tallies were unassisted and the second goal came with one second remaining in the match as Mines (1-1-1) was trailing 2-1. Cal Poly Pomona (2-0-1) got its two goals off the bench thanks to Mike Moser and Mikey Sedano. Mads Frederiksen provided an assist for the hosts as well. The Orediggers took 14 shots in the match but only three went on goal compared to the Broncos' 19 shots with 10 on goal.
Even though the home team won the first half, it was Mines producing the first quality opportunity in the 26th minute when
Caelin David sent a long, arcing shot towards the upper-right corner of the frame that required a diving save by the CPP goalkeeper. Another attempt from Azad Ilizoer just two minutes later sailed barely wide of the goal. The Broncos took advantage of the Orediggers' missed opportunities and claimed a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on a cross from Frederiksen finished in one-time fashion by Moser. Mines produced minimal offense through the final five minutes and the game went into intermission with Cal Poly Pomona holding a 1-0 lead.
Semelsberger earned the equalizer for the Orediggers in the second half at the 54-minute mark. His charge into the penalty area towards the goal resulted in an illegal tackle that stopped the clock and sent the Los Alamos, N.M., native to the spot for a penalty kick, which he converted. It appeared the 1-1 score would stand as the match carried all the way to the 87th minute. However, it was then that Sedano coverted a long throw-in by CPP and gave his team a commanding 2-1 lead with only 3:38 to play.
On the precipice of the 10-second countdown marking the imminent end of the match, the Broncos goalkeeper sailed a long goal kick deep into Oredigger territory. Mines goalkeeper
Brian Doherty corralled it and passed it off to David who sent the ball back into the Broncos' penalty area as the countdown began. His pass bounced off the head of a CPP defender and then to the feet of Semelsberger at the 18-yard line. He took one touch to control it and with the second touch he sent the ball from the right side of the frame to the far left, past the frozen goalkeeper with one second remaining on the clock. Nothing remained but to touch the ball at midfield and let the final whistle blow.
