LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Freshman
Max Lange took over the 36-hole lead and
Jake Welch fired a two-under 70 to lead Colorado School of Mines in the second round of The Writz at Mile High at Bear Creek.
Lange, playing as an individual, followed up Sunday's 69 with a one-under 71 to get to -4 and hold a one-shot lead over four other players. On a course where making pars almost always keeps you in contention, Lange had 15 of them mixed in with two front-nine birdies and just a single bogey on his 15th hole.
As a team, Mines dropped two spots to seventh after a +19 day, with all but one team in the field over par as the course firmed up after Saturday's rain and pin placements got harder on Monday. Welch led the charge with his 70 to jump into the top 10 at T9, recovering from two early bogeys to hit a torrid run of four straight birdies around the turn (and five in a six-hole stretch) to get to -1 for the tournament.
Ethan Adam had a 76 to sit at T24 (+3) through two rounds, and
Owen Cornmesser is a shot back on the leaderboard in T32 after a 75.
Lukas Taggart shot 77 (T44, +9) and
Carter Lolli rounded out the scoring with an 81 (T44, +9).
Connor Downey was the non-counter at 82 (T70, +17).
Among Mines' individuals,
Theodore Reitter was a shot off his collegiate low with a 73 to be T24 at +3, and
Jonathan Trigg shot 79 (T55, +11).
#14 CSU Pueblo surged to the team lead with the day's only under-par team round at -6, now sitting -1 for the tournament to lead Colorado Christian by eight shots. Sunday's leader West Texa A&M was +17 to fall to third. CSU-Pueblo's trio of Jamie Roberts, Liam Duncan, and Matt Millar are tied with Fort Lewis' Traejan Andrews for second place at -3, a shot behind Lange.
The third and final round of the tournament begins Tuesday at 8 a.m.
