ALAMOSA, Colo. – Oredigger senior
Rose Stuewe helped the #23 Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team to a 3-1 win against Adams State on Friday night at Plachy Hall.
Stuewe earned the headline on 18 kills off the pin.
Emily Knight was right behind with 13 kills.
Shannon Perna provided the crossover from offense to defense by producing a 12-kill, 12-dig double-double. Other Mines leaders included
Elle Duis and her 17 digs, and
Drew Stokes with her 49 assists. Also notable were 13 digs by
Audrey Richard and 12 digs from
Jada Price who also had two service aces.
Mines (11-4, 6-1 RMAC) earned the win thank to a team attack percentage of .273. Adams State (4-11, 1-6 RMAC) only hit .174 as a team. The Grizzlies won the service game with six aces compared to the Orediggers' five. However, Mines' 64-47 digs advantage extended drives and helped the visitors earn the win. The Orediggers now own a six-game win streak and also have the second-best record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. No other team is 6-1, and #2 MSU Denver and #17 Regis are the only 7-0 squads in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Oredigger volleyball was one of two Mines squads in action on Friday evening. They continued the winning ways for Mines Athletics. Early jousting in the first set saw the visitors fall behind by a 7-6 margin. Duis stepped to the line and pushed the Orediggers on a brief, but important, 3-0 run in service and gave Mines a 9-7 lead. Even though Adams State tied the score on multiple occasions, the Grizzlies could not recover the advantage. Perna hammered down four kills on five attempts with zero errors to hit .800, Richard walked away with five big digs and the visitors rolled to a 25-19 win in the opening set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Game two found the Orediggers facing a 13-20 deficit. Mines went on a 3-0 run including a kill from Duis. That forced an ASU timeout. The break did little to slow the Orediggers' momentum with
Jada Price at the service line. Eventually, the Grizzlies stopped their guests' run at 6-0 which made the score 21-19 in favor of the home team. An ASU ball-handling error tied the score at 22-22. Stuewe hammered down her eighth kill of the match to make it 23-22 and force an ASU timeout. Unfortunately for Mines, the Grizzlies held strong and powered to a 27-25 win to even the match.
A slew of kills by Stuewe pushed the Orediggers to an 11-8 lead in the third frame.
Morgan McChesney pieced together her own 3-0 run for Mines on a kill and an ace which sandwiched a Perna kill. The 14-9 lead for the visitors forced a timeout by Adams State. That led to a 4-0 run by the home team. The Orediggers called their own timeout at 14-13. It proved equally, if not more, effective as Mines burst out on its own 4-0 run to make it 18-13. It was all the Orediggers needed. They cruised to a 25-19 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth frame seemingly hinged on a challenge at 7-6. The end result went in favor of Adams State. However, the decision didn't matter. Mines won the fourth set by a score of 25-22. Four more kills from Perna and four more digs from Price helped lock in the match victory.
