GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines offensive coordinator Pete Sterbick has been named the Division II Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop, presented by AstroTurf.

Sterbick guided a historic Oredigger offense in 2022 that helped Mines (13-3) reach the NCAA Division II championship game for the first time, and along the way picked up a fourth consecutive RMAC championship and second straight Super Region IV title.

Mines led the nation in a number of offensive categories, including scoring offense (44.6 ppg), red zone offense (97%), and first downs offense (371) while ranking in the top 10 in total offense, completion percentage, passing offense, and fourth down conversion percentage. The Orediggers also had the nation's #3 turnover margin thanks to an offense that committed only 14 turnovers in 16 games. Mines topped 40 points 11 times including four times in the postseason.

Individually, the Oredigger offense earned a bevy of postseason awards led by quarterback John Matocha, who was the Harlon Hill Award winner as the national player of the year along with consensus all-America honors. Matocha produced a national-best 5,226 yards of total offense and led the nation in passing touchdowns (52), efficiency (178.8), and passing yards (4,778) while producing a 1,000-yard receiving tandem in all-American Max McLeod and Josh Johnston

Center Matt Armendariz was a consensus all-American and the Rimington Award winner as the best at his position, and running back Michael Zeman continued to bust records as he became Mines' all-time rushing and scoring leader during the season. Mines was the only D-II program and one of a handful at any level to have three 1,000+ yard skill position producers in 2022 with McLeod, Johnston, and Zeman. Mines had eight all-RMAC selections on offense plus RMAC Freshman of the Year Landon Walker, and Matocha, Armendariz, Zeman, and Levi Johnson were all named to the D2CCA All-Region team.

The FootballScoop Coordinator of the Year finalists included Sterbick, Pitt State's Tom Anthony, Shepherd's Tyler Haines, Bentley's Byron Porter, and Ferris State's Ryan Hodges. The award is chosen by the previous winners of the honor, which dates back to 2008.
