Mines Swimming Dominates Season Opener

PUEBLO, Colo.
– The #22-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams were dominant on Saturday as they opened their respective seasons at CSU Pueblo. The men defeated Adams State by a score of 178-26. Mines' women swept CSU Pueblo (136-50) and the Grizzlies (146-39).
 
Mines' dominance was highlighted by Orediggers swimming to gold in 20 out of 22 events competed. The women also broke five different pool records while the men and women both produced numerous lifetime bests. Included in the record-breaking swims were the 200-medley relay, 400-freestyle relay, Annie Osmun's 100-free, Savannah Karas' 200-fly, and Olivia Kisow's 400-IM. The pool record in the 400-freestlye relay was previously held by Mines. Kisow's 400-IM stood for just five minutes until it was taken down in the next heat.
 
The women's 200-medley relay team featured Emma Neuroth, Cameryn Schmidt, Osmun, and Jorie Selig. They teamed up to touch the wall in 1:49.45. Selig, Maggie Wells, Emi Jedryka, and Osmun were the 400-freestyle quartet that turned in a 3:39.69. Osmun posted a 53.53 in the 100-free. Karas went 2:11.95 in the 200-fly. Kisow's 400-IM was a 4:46.40 as an exhibition.
 
Lifetime bests on the men's side came from Joe Hutchinson, Max Waring and Scott Reeder in the 200-back. Ronan Lauinger swam an outstanding 400-IM. Luca Burns also came up big in the 200-back. Mattie Oberley nearly matched his top time from last season in the 200-fly. Lucas Hoke provided an outstanding collegiate debut in the 1000-free as well.
 
As previously stated, the men and women combined to swim in 22 events. Mines won 20 of those. Luca Burns, Gavin Gilmore, Waring, and Kevin Burns followed the women's 200-medley relay with a 1:36.44. True freshman Julie Gill won the 1000-free in 11:01.99 in her collegiate debut. Hoke's 1000-free came in at 9:57.81. Kyle VanderMeer finished the 200-free with a time of 1:58.89. The men's 200-free saw Jaron O'Grady stop the clock at 1:46.81. Selig's 50-free time was 25.09. Jakson Winn joined the sprint fun and won the men's 50-free in 21.37. Lauinger's previously-mentioned 400-IM performance was 4:09.40. Karas' 200-fly was noted above. Oberley won the men's 200-fly with a time of 1:56.80. Additional first-place finishers included Osmun, Michael Kietzman, Jedryka, Luca Burns, Gill, Jack Engler, and the men's 400-freestyle relay of Winn, Lauinger, Jake Sherman, and Braden Hunt.
 
There were also six collegiate debuts for Mines on Saturday. Already noted were Julie Gill and Lucas Hoke. Kevin Burns, Zooecia Phoebus, Joseph Lev-Tov, and Oliver Theby also appeared for the first time in competition wearing an Oredigger uniform.
 
Mines continues its season next weekend with its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Orediggers host Colorado Mesa starting at 3 p.m. It will be a Breast Cancer Awareness event with live video available for free on the RMAC Network.
