GOLDEN, Colo. - Two top-25 programs worked on building up their early-season performances as Colorado School of Mines hosted RMAC foe Colorado Mesa on Saturday.
CMU won both sides of the dual, 113-89 on the men's side and 121-79 for the women. The Mavericks came in ranked #2 nationally for the women and #3 for the men; the Orediggers are #22 for each in the CSCAA preseason poll.
Highlights for the men's competition included three event wins by the Orediggers. Jackson Winn comfortably won the 100-free by more than a half-second in 46.66, and
Luca Burns took home first in the 100-back at 49.89, one of two times under the pool record on the day as CMU's Ben Sampson had also gone sub-50 earlier in the meet with a 48.93 leadoff split in the 400-medley relay. It was a strong event for Mines as
Seth Krause joined Burns taking third in 53.14.
Lucas Hoke had an impressive home debut as the freshman won the 500-free in 4:44.93, and he would also place second in the 1000-free in 9:54.49.
Garrett Waite was the runner-up in the 200-IM at 1:56.92 and was third on time (first with exhibitions) in the 100-breast at 59.63. Winn, Waite, Burns, and Krause combined for a 1:24.84 time to be second on time in the 200-free relay, as well.
Individual highlights for the women included a number of second-place finishes.
Isabella Bono and
Julie Gill went 2-3 in the 1000-free in times of 10:57.77 and 10:58.84, respectively, and
Olivia Kisow followed that with a second-place 1:57.02 in the 200-free.
Jordan Tierney (25.16) and
Sarah Bennett (25.40) went 2-3 in the 50-free, and Tierney later was second on time in the 100-breast at 1:05.67.
Both women's relays had solid performances as the 400 medley relay of
Emi Jedryka, Tierney,
Annie Osmun, and
Jorie Selig swam 3:55.32 for second place, and the 200-free relay of Osmun, Jedryka,
Cameryn Schmidt, and
Jorie Selig was second on time in 1:38.31.
Mines' season continues next Saturday with a visit to Wyoming, and the Orediggers are back home Nov. 3 to host Colorado College.
