Perna Looms Large as Mines Sweeps NMHU

GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines Volleyball senior Shannon Perna committed zero attack errors on Saturday evening to hit .714 as the Orediggers swept New Mexico Highlands inside Lockridge Arena.

Perna closed out her error-free night with 10 kills on 14 attacks while adding five digs and two total blocks. Madison Glassco's 12 kills led all players as she converted at a clip of .385. Also notable on offense were Allison Jansen and Emily Knight who combined for 13 kills while both hitting over .500. On defense, Knight added three total blocks. Jada Price led the way by grinding out 10 digs. Setter Presley Powell produced a resume featuring 37 assists, three digs, one block, one service ace, and one kill. Glassco nearly made it a double-double for the night thanks to eight digs.

Mines (8-7, 2-3 RMAC) notched its second straight-set win of the season by hitting .506 as a team. That number broke the program record for hitting percentage in a three-set match. It marks the first time in program history that an Oredigger team has ever cracked .500 on the attack in a match of any length. New Mexico Highlands (1-16, 0-6 RMAC) saw its losing streak go to 16 matches after the Oredigger defense held the Cowgirls to .097 on the attack. Overall, Mines committed just four attack errors and came out positive in all but two statistical categories listed in the box score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines entered the night playing its first home match in exactly 21 days. The Orediggers came out of the gate clicking on all cylinders, pushing the score to 9-4 before a scary injury caused a lengthy delay in the match. After the long pause in play, Mines appeared unshaken as it continued on to a 25-12 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. Perna was perfect in the opening frame, converting four kills on four attacks for a 1.000 hitting percentage in the set. Stuewe also notched four kills in the first game.

Shenanigans of any sort after the first set could not rattle the Orediggers. Price's seven digs anchored a 25-17 win in game two. Not to be ignored were five more kills off the left hand of Perna. Knight was error-free in the second set as well. That led to the final frame of the evening. Mines committed zero attack errors, Glassco exploded for six kills, and the home team rolled to a 25-13 win to clinch the 3-0 victory. It capped a match in which there were just two ties and zero lead changes.
