INDOOR SEASON OPENS WITH HOME ALUMNI CLASSIC
Colorado School of Mines opens the new indoor track & field season this weekend, hosting the two-day Mines Alumni Classic at Steinhauer Fieldhouse. Friday's session starts at 4:30 p.m. with the long jump, pole vault, and shot put, and then Saturday's field sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. with the weight throw, triple jump, and high jump, and a full track slate goes off at 1 p.m. Live results will be available at
minesathletics.com/tracklive.Â
IMPORTANT FAN INFORMATION
Saturday's session will run at the same time as Mines' playoff football game taking place at Marv Kay Stadium, and fans coming to the meet should be aware that it will be busy in the area. The parking garage at 14th and Maple Streets (across the street and one block south of Steinhauer Fieldhouse) is the recommended parking spot for all attendees. Fans can also consider parking elsewhere on campus and using the free Ore Cart shuttle service, which stops at 13th and Maple next to Steinhauer Fieldhouse -

HEADED EAST
While the Orediggers open the season in Golden, one competitor will head east as
Loic Scomparin runs in the elite Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University on Saturday. Scomparin, coming off an all-America finish in cross country and a terrific 2022-23 year that saw him score podium finishes in all three seasons, will run in the 5,000m run on BU's fast track.
IN THE POLLS
Coming off the first conference indoor championship in program history, the Mines women topped the RMAC preseason coaches' poll announced earlier this week, with the men appearing third. With large groups of returning NCAA scorers, both teams should figure into the national polls when the USTFCCCA announces its first ratings index on Jan. 22.
WHAT TO WATCH
The Alumni Classic features some large fields with plenty of familiar local competition including UCCS, Colorado Christian, CSU Pueblo, Colorado Mesa, Colorado State, and Colorado. Mines will have a full set of 47 entries; on the track, highlights include both 800m events headlined by top seeds
Aryelle Wright,
Tim Thompson, and
Andy Gebhardt; a contingent of men's 5K entries led by
Andrew Kaye and outdoor steeplechase all-American
Max Bonenberger; and
Avary Catchings is the second seed in the 400m.Â
The field events include plenty of familiar Oredigger faces including the loaded pole vault fields with all-Americans
Hannah Miller,
Avery Herbold, and
Hunter Potrykus leading 11 total Mines entries;
Grant Redmond,
Lexye Wood, and
Claire Kintzley in the high jump; Wood in the long jump; Fischer Argosino and
Nicholas Nijkamp in the triple jump; and six returning throwers including
Brody Welch,
Hayden Swim, and
Davin Kiesby for the men and
Kitt Rupar,
Jennifer Jarnagin, and
Abbi Gillespie for the women. And while there's no multi-event this weekend, NCAA outdoor qualifier
Avery Wright will compete in the 60m, 60m hurdles, long jump, and shot put.Â
WHO'S BACK
The Orediggers return a wealth of experience and national-caliber performers for 2023-24, including a dozen 2023 indoor all-Americans. The group is headlined by defending national pole vault champion
Hannah Miller, who leads another very strong vault group for the Orediggers this season. She's joined by first-team all-Americans
Zoe Baker (5,000m),
Aryelle Wright (800m),
Loic Scomparin (3,000m), and
Hunter Potrykus (PV), and second-team All-Americans
Avery Herbold (PV),
Lexye Wood (LJ),
Tim Thompson (800m),
Molly Maksin (3,000m and 5,000m),
Duncan Fuehne (5,000m), and
Everett Delate (60mH). Combined, that group of returners set or were a part of seven different program indoor records in 2022-23.
MISS ALL-AMERICA
While she was out of cross country eligibility this fall, distance star
Zoe Baker returns for one last go-around on the track this winter and spring having become the most-awarded athlete in Mines history. Baker's pair of all-America finishes at NCAA Outdoors last year took her to 13 for her career, the most by any athlete in any sport in Mines history. She surpassed track & field's Dylan Ko and Mack McLain (12 each) and swimming's Mia Wood (11) for that distinction. Baker is Mines' recordholder indoors in the 5K and is second all-time in the 3K behind teammate
Molly Maksin.Â
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will compete again before winter break at the UCCS Pre-Holiday Invite on Dec. 8-9, then pick up the indoor season again at UCCS on Jan. 19-20. Other upcoming home meets include the Mines Winter Classic on Jan. 26-27 and the Mines Pre-Conference on Feb. 16-17. RMAC Championships will be at Black Hills State on Feb. 23-24, and NCAAs are at Pittsburg State on March 8-9.Â
