Stuewe Spearheads Five-Set Victory Against CCU

GOLDEN, Colo. – Oredigger outside hitter Rose Stuewe was the star of the show on Saturday evening as the Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team took a five-set win off of Colorado Christian inside Lockridge Arena.

Stuewe led all players with 20 kills in the match, and no CCU hitter had more attempts than the Mines outside hitter who finished the night hitting .471 on 34 attempts. Shannon Perna complimented her teammate by doing it all for the Orediggers. Playing opposite of Stuewe, Perna stacked up 12 kills on .364 hitting with six total blocks, four digs, and three service aces. Madison Glassco produced double-digit kills as well, putting down 10 while adding seven digs. Libero Jada Price ground out 20 digs along with two aces and four assists. Setter Presley Powell had a resume featuring 49 assists, three digs, two kills, one ace and one block. Also notable was middle blocker Morgan McChesney. She churned out nine kills on .333 hitting with five total blocks

Mines (6-4, 1-1 RMAC) outhit Colorado Christian (4-6, 0-2 RMAC) as the Orediggers knocked down 60 kills at a .299 efficiency. The Cougars had 57 kills while hitting .277. That being said, CCU won the service game thanks to 11 aces. Mines offset that production with 12 total blocks and a 52-51 edge in digs. Colorado Christian only managed six blocks but surely appreciated Libby Goodman's 16 kills at a .424 clip. The Cougars also saw Renee Phillips stack up 14 kills with a .542 attack percentage. Phillips also touted four total blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For a second straight night, the home team came out fast and efficient. Stuewe had four kills and no errors. Glassco also had four kills and no errors. Perna notched four kills as well, and McChesney knocked down two kills with no errors. The result was a .467 attack percentage as team. That helped Mines take a 1-0 lead in the match thanks to a 25-17 win in the first set. However, the tables quickly turned as Colorado Christian rolled to a 25-11 win in game two while holding the Orediggers to .038 on the attack. Even so, Stuewe still stacked up four more kills.

The third set of the evening was a dogfight featuring seven ties and two lead changes. Mines came out on top, 25-23, after Stuewe hammered out six more kills, the Orediggers totaled four blocks, and the offense converted at .429 for the frame. Three service aces in the fourth set helped the Cougars force a decisive fifth set. That, and a .359 attack percentage despite eight incredible digs from Price. But at the end of the night, it was Mines' day. The home team hit .471 and only committed three errors on the way to a 15-8, match-clinching win. Stuewe had three kills in the frame including the final winner which undoubtedly left CCU thunderstruck.
